Another badly worded retirement article
« on: August 20, 2014, 06:13:17 AM »
Ok, so this thing's fucked up.

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/tiny-house-movement-binge-saving-160717992.html

My beef is pretty much all of it, except the intention to provide retirement advice. But seriously, they say $17,000 per year from SS and assume that savings will be $250,000 at retirement. The author calls this a "scary" picture. It's scary that by investing your savings you could earn 27,000 p.a. for life? Definitely enough to live on in most of this country, especially when you consider this: http://taxfoundation.org/blog/real-value-100-each-state. SMDH.

Are we reading the same article? It's much better than typical Yahoo Finance fare - he talks about high savings rates (40%), downsizing housing, limiting unnecessary expenditures, investment balance, and figuring out your retirement plan before actually reaching retirement. Pretty much what is preached around here, watered down for a typical Yahoo Finance audience.

It's better than the usual fluff coming out of YF, such as http://finance.yahoo.com/news/much-down-payment-really-buy-111542629.html  or http://finance.yahoo.com/news/best-student-credit-cards-america-093033669.html

I found that interesting, but perhaps not always useful. I could get more for my $100 by moving to PA. Ok, but is that Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, or middle of nowhere PA? Pretty big difference.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
