Couponing for water
« on: May 11, 2012, 06:25:04 AM »
I was just looking at this photo in the NYTimes Magazine. The article is about families who built a biz out of couponing--I haven't read the entire article yet, so I this post isn't about the substance of the article. What struck me is this photo, where the family (of nine) displays the groceries they got with coupons. Including Aquafina bottled water .... isn't that free if you just turn on the tap? And boxed mac and cheese. I haven't made mac and cheese lately, but it occurs to me you could make more for cheaper from scratch.

There seems to be a common wisdom that drinking water needs to be bought in bottles.  Of all my mustachian behaviors drinking tap water is what that generates the most puzzled looks.  Which of course puzzles me because most of the people around me are buying the "cheaper" water that is clearly labeled as being municipal tap water.

"Yet with the supermarket in sight, they grew visibly jazzed, like Vegas high rollers entering a casino. “We’ll have it all to ourselves, and we’ll know all the cashiers,” Knight said."

"Once the children had been shooed out of her office, Yoder told me with a sigh how her own mother used to prepare “a hot breakfast” every day. Yoder doesn’t often have time to cook."

Good grief, what a life.

You could invest in a RO water filter if it was that important. Or a Brita/PUR water pitcher for an even cheaper investment. That's not hard to understand for most people, I should think.

Couponers seem to miss the whole point of money and life in my opinion...

I once made a mac-n-cheese from scratch that cost me $24. But that was a damned-good mac!

Regarding water- I have a nalgene bottle with me almost every time I leave the house, and I fill it from my fridge which has a filtering system. Before I had this fancy fridge, I had a Brita attachment on the sink faucet and a filter jug in the fridge. $9.50 seems high for the bottle until you realize they are indestructable and will last forever. They should be looking for Brita coupons!

I'm lucky enough to have an AWESOME mineral water spring near my house that is tapped and tested by the local authorities. Never had better tasting water in my life, and it's 100% free. I just bring my 5 gallon jug over there and fill it up.

The water here in San Antonio is so hard it tastes weird. Reverse osmosis seems to be the main thing I need, and filtering out some chlorine taste is a benefit.

Why pay $1/gallon when walmart has a dispenser where it's charcoaled, RO'd, UV'd etc, for 37 cents a gallon? I mean, if you have to buy it, you might as well look for the cheapest option.

And often, the cheapest option is to fill your bottle at the filter at work before you go home. :)
