401k match whine
« on: February 11, 2016, 12:23:47 PM »
A friend of my texted me to complain when she  finally went to enroll in her company's 401k.

To get the match from her company would involve her putting in $200 a month.

She then bitched and moaned about how much she couldn't afford it, that this was the equivalent of grocery money.

I did not feel bad for her.

She has a BMW  car note, with an interest rate of 7%.

She also recently moved into a new shishi two-bedroom apartment with her designer toy dog. She is single, the second bedroom is for the dog, and so that her entire apartment won't smell like dog.

she sent me photos. it comes with a hot-tub!!

sometimes you laugh and want to strangle at the same time.

Obviously this person is having difficulty grasping the idea of savings as a gift-to-future-self.

At least her grocery budget is only $200? (actually, I suspect it's much higher but that she probably doesn't realize it?)

...I'm still trying to master that one. My monthly food budget has been probably $500/mo the last few months. Gotta stop eating out for lunch!

Delayed gratification is a concept that isn't being taught by parents.
Don't expect your children's educators to teach this concept.
Stupidity, like excellence, begins at home.

Not hard to 'stick' to a $200 grocery budget if you eat out all the time! I totally believe that the groceries for her only cost $200, it's the total food/drink budget I expect is enormous :P

Also this is hilarious, thank you for that! Many people's priorities are very strange!

Exactly; the idea is to be able to afford groceries when you're retired.

I met with a student in my office that was going to drop out of college because they had bills and needed to work. I asked what kind of bills and they said "car payment" I asked why they needed such a fancy car that required a loan and they said "to get to work"

I'm betting the irony was lost on this student.
