I don't mean to put down everyone who uses a purse, but I hate purses so the irony of the Stephanie McCurdy one is hilarious. She's carrying her credit card in her bra because it's so much more more convenient and faster access than her purse...and she needs fast access so she can buy another purse.

Unlike most designer purses, I almost like the look of this one. I like the backpack in the picture a lot.
And...of course the purse is $500 and the backpack $675. But the Celine brand they talk about? Not a fan of the style, and the cost looks to be $2500 on the low end. I have a rule that my purse cannot cost more than my car! One of my favorite games to play with my SO is "guess the price" whenever we happen upon a store that sells fancy designer things. He's very bad at this game.

I saw a Coach purse at an outlet store last year - very nice, well designed, nice leather - but at $175 it was not in my price range. At $75 I probably would have bought it, because I could see myself using it for years and years. And I know I would, classic is classic because it never really goes out of style (let's not discuss how old some of my clothes are).
I look at these ads and think that they are aimed at an age group that is in their early working years, where salaries are not high - and they are expected to pay how much for a purse? Go down that road and you will be working until you are 65.

I don't like cheap purses that begin to fall apart in a matter of weeks, but after you pass a certain price point, you're paying for status.
In the case of this purse, I have to notice that it's a large bag on a skinny strap. Every woman knows that's a recipe for a purse that'll dig into your shoulder and be uncomfortable.
No, I can't buy the "it'll hold its value" at all.
And I must admit that I had a bad thought about one of my students yesterday: She's a high school senior who has moved in with her boyfriend because her mother is just too strict and mean, and -- as a result -- she's working LOTS of hours, and she literally cried in my class yesterday because she can't keep up with the homework. Yet as she and I talked, I couldn't help noticing the Coach bag on her desk. And the iPhone in her hand. And while her clothes are probably bought at Target, she rarely repeats an outfit (though, in her defense, none of her outfits contain very much cloth). These things aren't my business, so I didn't point out any of these things, but I did discuss getting her priorities into order.

Yes! I agree, although I love the weather of not having to wear a jacket, I feel almost off kilter.
