"Stop reading personal finance blogs!"
« on: September 16, 2013, 01:34:37 PM »
Every subject in personal finance has been blogged at least a hundred times, and we bloggers are all just remasticating (or regurgitating) the same ol' stuff.

But the lack of novelty doesn't stop me, and my faith is renewed whenever I see someone come out with a truly creative approach to the topic:
http://www.thousandaire.com/stop-reading-all-personal-finance-blogs-now/

The problem?  He's spending $20K on their wedding.

The solution?  He's willing to work for it because it matches his values.  Now if he could just figure out how to stop wasting money on fripperies like housing, transportation, kids, pets, and dining out...

Credit for this link goes to one of the very few PF bloggers who manages to repeatedly come up with fresh approaches to the subject: J. Money at Budgets Are Sexy (http://www.budgetsaresexy.com/).  He's just started a daily digest of other creative PF blogs at Rockstar Finance (http://rockstarfinance.com/).

Enjoyed Thousandaire until the post about cashing out IRAs and not investing in the market other than 401k...eeek. Rockstar site looks fun too, thanks

Great stuff right there :)

I have just jumped in to the personal finance blog world, and am finding that I learn something new about 10% of the time, and I have been reading A LOT. It's nice to see a good perspective.

Thanks for the Rockstar blog link, Nords.  I sent them my latest piece - Zen and the Art of Yard Maintenance.  Perhaps the first philosophical take on mowing grass.

Good analogy.  Heh.  Would true inner piece be achieved by not having to ever mow the grass?

Yes.

Just kidding. It would come from never having to clean my house. :)

Sorry, I don't have any philosophical takes on cleaning the house.  Cleaning toilets is still cleaning toilets.  Sweeping is still sweeping.  It isn't like yard work.  You can't really commune with nature when you're cleaning a sink.  I've never witnessed butterflies flitting about our flowers or spotted a fox slinking through the tall grasses by the lake while mopping my floors inside.

But we still do all our own housework.

You can commune with nature while cleaning if you have a cat, but sometimes they tend to get really interested in what you're doing and get in the way.

I fantasize about "no housework" too, but nothing screws that up faster than the reality of kids & pets.

We managed to put our kid in charge of cleaning her room/bathroom and doing her own laundry.  That taught her some interesting college survival skills...

LOL. +1

I'm so glad that my mom did that for me, too.  The guys across the hall from me didn't have a clue (co-ed dorm obviously).  I had to teach them how to mop their room.  Actually, I think they managed to hoodwink me into doing it for them. Smart guys!

You can't commune with nature, but it can be a meditational experience wherein you equate the physical dirt with mental and emotional as you wash it away...

I'm definitely a procrasticleaner....
