Longtime Etobicoke resident Rosalind D’Costa agreed, adding that she can only hope the seniors’ units that will be built will not be too small.

“Don’t build matchboxes,” she said. “We are the generation used to bigger homes.”

LOL. I think there are a lot of people headed for a nasty surprise. Just wait until they figure out how much Medicare is going to cost them.

This article is in Canada, so Medicare doesn't apply. But in the US it most certainly does.

From the survey at the bottom of the article:

--------------------------------------------------------
Will a reinvented Cloverdale Mall benefit the surrounding community?
- Yes, the site has been in need of an update for years.
- I like the idea of having a "complete community."
- Yes, but I'm weary of whether the developers will be able to accommodate all the area needs.
- No, it's an important fixture in the community and should be left the way it is. This issue is not important to me.
--------------------------------------------------------

Ugh!  It's WARY.  As in, I'm weary of seeing "wary" misspelled.  This instance is worse than usual, too.  Most often we see this mistake in the comments section, but it's so much worse in the part produced by the actual publication.

Sigh.

Not to mention senior housing.  My mother pays $2,500 a month for her apartment in an independent living facility in an LCOL area.  She has two bedrooms and a small kitchen.  The elderly dependent on some type of subsidies live in studios.

Another possibility is they meant "leery". I guess they just combined wary and leery, haha.

This seems ridiculously high. Does this abode also include a meal  plan and other services?

OK boomer (to those folks in the article).

Really just the one lady who can’t imagine having to slum it in an apartment that would have been fine for her parents (and probably her grandkids). She seems like exactly the subtype of that generation for whom OK Boomer was coined.

Otherwise, this development sounds like a cool idea. I’d love to see my parents (boomers but not OK Boomers) in something like that. Mom still works, as do most of my parents’ neighbors, so during the day the only other people in his vicinity are the very elderly and reclusive couple next door. A more social and accessible community would be great for him.

OK boomer (to those folks in the article).

I thought it was funny, the two people they quoted.  Affordable, not luxury, but not too small!

Yes - breakfast and dinner.  Not exactly haute cuisine, however - more like school cafeteria.  Weekly light housekeeping is also supposed to be included, but it's hit or miss.  They can't keep housekeepers on staff.

The facility she's in was one of the more affordable options we shopped.  Most were in the $3,500 range, and that's for fairly basic facilities.  "Luxury" facilities (like the woman in the posted article seems to expect) can run $10,000 a month.

As a boomer I laughed when I read this. You can’t be fussy if you need subsidized housing.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
