Title: $51.69 Yoghurt at Erewhon
Post by: MustacheBeginner on May 26, 2018, 09:20:20 AM
No joke :) people actually spend $51.69 (+tax) for a yoghurt at Erewhon, a new small grocery store that opened recently across the street where I live. You can also buy a bottle of water for some $25 (according to a neighbor) or a single Kiwi cut into slices and dried for $8.

Can you believe it? The store is humming like a bee hive.

What?  How big a yoghurt are we talking here?  Is it huge?  Does it have some kind of precious ingredient?

Wow - where on earth do you live that people have that kind off money to throw around?

I had to look it up. I'm assuming you mean this place: https://www.facebook.com/ErewhonMarket (https://www.facebook.com/ErewhonMarket) Yikes. Even the positive reviews call it overpriced.

According to their Facebook page, you can buy an 18-oz loaf of paleo bread for $16. I can buy a 3 lb. bag of almond flour and make several loaves of paleo bread for that price.

Does the yogurt contain truffles or gold leaf or milk from cattle in Wagyu prefecture?

It's just the size of the typical pasta sauce glass, nothing extraordinary. It says something like "pro-biotic" so i guess that is why haha. It is really amazing seeing all those people going in an out there every day. If you fill up a shopping cart for $100 somewhere, the same there must be easily around $500-$600.

Yup that's the place. I am surprised the bread is only $16! I think the yogurt just contains a marketable load of BS :)

I think you mean "bovine gastrointestinal microbiota."  :-P

Activia yogurt has pro-biotics, and you can buy it at most grocery stores. For $50 you could get 2 cases, which is 12 pounds of yogurt with pro-biotics. ;-)

We stopped in at one once because my daughter had to use the bathroom on a road trip. I bought a cup of (plain drip) coffee while she was in the bathroom, and we looked around the store. Definitely one of the most expensive places I've ever seen; makes Whole Foods and our local health food chain, Jimbo's, seem very reasonable! Nice, clean bathrooms though, if you're ever in a pinch driving through Calabasas. ;)

I'm scared that in a few years this will become standardplace. Prices seemingly everywhere is going up way faster than inflation. I didn't do any research, just going off neighborhood prices and the like.

One of these stores opened in my town because we have hundreds of millionaires with no money sense whatsoever. They also push a lot of half-baked "natural superfood" nonsense that people love to gobble up here. All I can say is more power to them...the market will support whatever it can. If you have enough money to spend $50 on a cup of yogurt, you have enough money to get an education about actual science.

Not quite as bad, but there is a local frozen yogurt shop where you pay by the oz. It's not very hard to spend $30 to treat the family.  Only happened once though...

We have something similar. We too only visited once. The next time I went to the grocery I brought the kids. Made sure they understood what ice cream and all the extras cost - and that after we ate our fill there was still more ice cream and extras for the next time - and we still spent less than the "by the oz" shop.

Am I the only person who thinks that "Erewhon" sounds a little bit like Tolkien's cow? Also, if you rearrange the letters, it spells out "Nowhere".

Quote from:  Wikipedia
Erewhon: or, Over the Range is a novel by Samuel Butler which was first published anonymously in 1872. The title is also the name of a country, supposedly discovered by the protagonist. In the novel, it is not revealed where Erewhon is, but it is clear that it is a fictional country. Butler meant the title to be understood as the word "nowhere" backwards even though the letters "h" and "w" are transposed. The book is a satire on Victorian society.

Instantly, my brain queued up and began playing Randy Newman singing, "I Love L.A."
