Title is cringe worthy enough. Try to make it all the way through the article.

I made it!  I like satire.  This was not a great example, but had some funny parts.  Not sure how that's anti-Mustachian though...  To bastardize Arsenio Hall in Coming to America -- If making fun of truck owners is wrong, I don't wanna be right.

I thought it was funny. As a former truck owner, the hilarious thing is that he's a little right about some of that stuff. I had a pretty nice BMW before the truck, which was a plain white 4x4 Tacoma Access Cab. I swear, I got more women talking to me after getting out of that truck than I ever did in the BMW.  My girlfriend hated the female attention I got, but she liked the truck too!

It's funny how people's brains work: truck=manly and capable, even though I was driving it back and forth to an office job.

That was pretty funny. Best part was that the advertising panel at the end of the article was showing me an Edmunds.com ad with a gallery of efficient vehicles . . . that will be considered ripe for a Mustachian to pick up in about five to six years.

I've yet to understand the appeal of a truck from strictly astethic purposes.  Then again I'm not into bro country or date rape either. I've found my minivans to be infinitely more versatile than a truck.  3500lbs of towing, awd, and 7 seats to boot.  And I can still haul sheet goods with the seats down.

The other day I was at HD getting trim for a couple doorways. The 10-pack of trim was 8 feet long, but only inches wide/deep.

As I popped open the hatch on my Sonic, a guy walking by laughed and made a comment along the lines of "Betcha wish you had a truck so you wouldn't have to stuff that in your car, guffaw." This conflicted with the thoughts in my head which were "If it were summer, I could probably carry this home on my bike."

I put the trim in the car, shut the hatch and drove home, better for the experience.

I've seen through enough hopeless men with trucks to mentally get past the marketing department's version of truck = manly man.

Especially when the p/u men are coming to me for answers about what's broken, how do I fix this, who do you know who is an expert, etc.

I still get it all done with a tiny trailer and a four cylinder CUV while the cowboy over there needs an 7500 lb truck to haul 300 lbs of cargo.

My CWs all drive trucks to the office, except for one who just added a new car because his truck was aging out (he kept it for occasional hauling). They all plan on working till their 60s too, even the ones already getting a military pension.

Meanwhile, weird old me is probably driving outta here next year aged 38, in my embarrassing little unmanly EV, which probably does more supply hauling and construction-related work than all those muhfu'n trucks put together... but that's none of my business xD

The post to which you are replying was clearly more specific than "truck owner", referring to a subculture that is drawn to trucks by their aesthetic appeal. IOW, all hat, no cattle.

I wasn't aware that people who drive trucks for their aesthetic appeal were into date rape.  If that's the defense, sounds just as bad.

BTW, I thought the article was funny.  Don't own a truck.  Think people with trucknuts are morons.

Having said all that,  generalizing that a segment of the population are rapists doesn't strike me as funny.

It's a freaking machine (sometimes useful but often stupid) not a pair of extra large testicles.

Right, but you can buy a pair of extra large testicles for it - can't hang those with the ground clearance of a Civic, can you? :p

Nobody knows what to make of me.  I own a huge truck for hauling and towing, and ride an electric bike.  :)

I'm guessing that most people here find it funny, but wouldn't find it funny that I think most cyclists are spandex wearing wannabe racer dweebs with tiny arm muscles.  Cuts both ways.

And I don't drive a truck, nor have I ever wanted to.

I've wanted to drive a truck everytime I developed a sudden need to move large, heavy objects. Found it remarkably effective. Oddly enough, my interest disappeared 100% after completion of the task. It's kind of like how some people define porn, now that I think about it.

That's kind of a funny image there, actually. You're probably right that a lower ratio of MMM'ers would be amused by it, but I don't think of these folks as easily offended either.

I ride bikes and wear spandex and those comments don't offend me (they just sound ignorant).  Calling someone a wannabee blah blah blah tour de france freak is very different from calling them a rapist.

The rape comment is over the top to me.

A few years ago, when we made our most extensive furniture purchase ever (a new bed and some bookshelves from IKEA), we needed something bigger than our sedan to get things home and asked our friendly, minivan driving, landlord neighbor to help us. He was happy to help, but I had the thought as we loaded our purchases on the cart in the self-service warehouse that if I had the right bike trailer I could haul it all myself.

Well you aren't a "real" man unless you are using your truck to haul your bike somewhere to ride it ;).

Does hauling three electric bikes to work one day in my truck so I could do an ebike "demo day" for people who are interested count?

My kind of weird - bike plus truck. Contradiction.

Saw a truck in traffic with two huge NUTS dangling from the rear bumper. As in steel, hexagon shaped, probably from a bridge or ship or something. I liked his humor.

I get my truck driving out of my system at work - 1.5 ton Terrastar and a range of 3/4 ton p/u trucks. Don't have those kinds of needs in my personal life very often. When I win the lottery (which I never buy tickets for) I'm going to have a 1.5 ton Terrastar pickup and a Tesla S. ;)

I like them both and need neither.

I prefer the term, "Optimizing for my needs."

I don't need a truck to haul me 5 miles to and from work.  And my ebike won't tow a trailer with an antique car on it across a few states.

No no that's an even worse thing a "real" man can do. You may end up convincing a couple of borderline beta boys to chuck their cajones and shun trucks and ride bikes instead. OH.THE.HORROR!!!!!

Damn!  You're on to me!  See, really, my goal is to turn everyone else into "beta boys" so I can be "swimming in pussy" or whatever it is I'd supposedly be doing if I were the only one with a truck.

My truck is a large pain in the ass.  However, it's also quite capable of doing things you can't do with a minivan, such as towing 6k lbs of car & trailer, or a 5th wheel, or hauling 2000 lbs of dirt/gravel/etc...

And those things are increasingly relevant in my life. :)

Why? When it's hot and you're on a 50 mile ride with 4000+ feet of climbing nothing wicks sweat and keeps you cool like spandex. I resisted for a long time because it looks goofy, but dang if it isn't infinitely more comfortable.

I've lived in the south and rural parts of the midwest.   The majority of people that yelled "faggot" at me while out for a run or on my bike were driving shiny trucks and/or wearing tap out shirts.  No, I've never witnessed these particular people sexually assaulting drunken coeds, but it's not really a stretch to imagine they would, is it?

For the record, I used to do construction during college and can completely understand the utility of a pu if you're a contractor or landscaper.    I just don't understand why some douchey  dudes think it's cool to drive a sub 10mpg vehicle just to haul mulch once a year

I skimmed that article and I reckon the guy is serious. I also reckon it is so sad that people have to drive freaken trucks assuming it isn't required for your job. If you are driving a truck to pick up women or impress your mates it's pretty sad.

Then again people do all sorts of stupid shit to fit in or look cool.

In 2004, straight outta college (university fer dang Brits), I desperately wanted a brand spankin' new red Ford F-150 Lightning. Why? Because I had the scale model.
Then I got a field engineer job in Los Angeles for the summer. I drove convertibles, coupes, SUVs, trucks all on the company's dime. Got my buzz filled when sitting on the LA freeways in traffic, which is ALL the time. I don't know when the 55 and 57 were never gridlocked. 5 months of this and the itch was cured for a lifetime. Trucks and SUVs for the week to carry cellular network monitoring equipment, convertibles for the weekends to cruise PCH from San Diego to Los Angeles to Ventura county.

Lots of insecure men out there making certain fashion choices and consumer choices. They've got to make sure they make the right choices and YOU make the right (same) choices too. ;)

I'm had similar incidents (some involved trucks).  Yes, it's a pretty big stretch to think some dickhead who doesn't like your bike is a rapist.  I think it's an even bigger stretch to assume all truck owners who don't meet your criteria for ownership fall into that category.

Yes a doctor will fix you;-) As a girly girl (um .. I mean womanly woman) with a truck (yes I know a Ford Ranger isn't a real truck and neither is my very cute and girly sister's Frontier) I always get all brisley and indignant about the truck equals man thing. It's a freaking machine (sometimes useful but often stupid) not a pair of extra large testicles. Now I think I''ll go paint my truck pink ;-)!  Loved the article BTW. Makes me want to paint my truck pink more then ever and get a scantily clad beefcake boy to ride in the back waving.

Is it just an accent thing, perhaps they were shouting "faggot?"
The whole cowboy gear, leather and big trucks is a bit "village people" - did they look disappointed when you said no?

The guy across the street from me owns the largest truck known to man. It doesn't fit in his driveway. True to stereotype, he's short and skinny, and it's presumable that his physical inadequacy extends to his "equipment." It inspired me to write a song: "Giant Truck, Tiny Pen!s" : https://soundcloud.com/chairmanzeitgeist/giant-truck-tiny-pens

Here in the south, the giant flag in the truck bed would be a rebel flag.  I've also seen one with a machine gun mounted on top of the cab.  (Hopefully, non functional).

I've also seen a rebel flag bumper sticker on a Prius here in the south.  Maybe he was saving the planet while promoting his southern heritage.

At least you're in the south.  I'm infinitely more confused by midwesterners "showing their southern pride"

I don't think the wanna-be phenomenon knows regional boundaries.

I have a younger male relative, born and raised Canadian, who went through a bit of a Redneck Pride phase while he was in high school.

A city boy born and raised, my relative didn't like going out to visit other relatives on the farm. He never did learn to ride a horse or drive a tractor competently. But he was an extremely good shot, and liked to stomp around in a duster and a filthy cowboy hat. He was obsessed with the "Dukes of Hazzard" TV show, which was in its umpteenth set of reruns by the time he came along. He got in trouble with his parents for putting a rebel flag bumper sticker on his truck, and for racking up a list of traffic infractions as long as his arm.

Not long afterwards, my relative went through a construction worker phase (without an apprentice ticket), a biker phase (he didn't have a motorcycle and wasn't licensed to ride one, he just had the leathers and tats), and a law enforcement phase (security guard, since no PD would hire him). To my knowledge he hasn't yet gone through an Indian phase, so his Village People card isn't quite full.

I've yet to understand the appeal of a truck from strictly astethic purposes.  Then again I'm not into bro country or date rape either.

What does date rape have to do with being a truck owner?

I've lived in the south and rural parts of the midwest.   The majority of people that yelled "faggot" at me while out for a run or on my bike were driving shiny trucks and/or wearing tap out shirts.  No, I've never witnessed these particular people sexually assaulting drunken coeds, but it's not really a stretch to imagine they would, is it?

For the record, I used to do construction during college and can completely understand the utility of a pu if you're a contractor or landscaper.    I just don't understand why some douchey  dudes think it's cool to drive a sub 10mpg vehicle just to haul mulch once a year

A modern truck, such as the 2.7L ecoboost f-150, will get 20/26 (epa) and still have more capability (HP, low end torque, towing capacity) than an old school f-150 with a giant ass V-8. Amazing what you can do with turbos, aluminum body construction and modern electronically controlled engines. It helps that towing capacity is typically not limited by engine power, but by how stable of a towing platform a vehicle makes. You want a long wheelbase, solid axle, 3.73 axle ratio, etc.

Still horrible mileage for a commute and a bad choice for professional work if it's anything but the base model, but not monstrously bad (single digit mpg) like in in previous generations.

Yeah... the new F150s are getting pretty close to my old F350 in terms of towing (not quite there because they're short and light, but they certainly have the power to do it), but would very likely demolish me in fuel economy while towing.

Oh, my, that video, bless their hearts (did I get that right?).  I may have nightmares tonight.  But they sure did have a point  ;-)

If you want scantily-clad beefcake boys, there is a music video for you!
Lightly NSFW Country Song :)
OMG!! I take it back - no boys in their Daisy Dukes in the back of my truck. Please God NO.  But I think there was more cake and not enough beefcake in that video ;-). Soooo much cake....

Funny article !

I'm a truck guy, that's all I've driven for years.  Four door so we cal haul 4-6 people, drives and rides like a car, decent mileage, 4wd for bad weather or off road, pretty decent mileage 16-20 mpg, can haul a whole bunch of crap when necessary and tow heavy loads, plus still looks good enough cleaned up you can drive it to the office, the golf course or a wedding and not look out of place.    Living on a farm and doing lots of handyman projects I wouldn't be without one.  I can buy a little extra gas much cheaper than buying and insuring another high mileage vehicle for times when truck isn't needed.
