Title: $1.4 million spent on MMORPG character
Post by: RWD on November 21, 2019, 09:32:17 AM
I can't even fathom blowing that much money on something so ethereal.

What...

The...

Fuck...

The article is so poor in details that it's virtually just gibberish, but honestly, what the fuck?

I don't play those games. But how the heck do you spend $1.4M on a character?

I'm assuming it has some sort of gacha mechanics where you pay for a chance to get something (e.g. loot boxes). If the odds are low enough for the item you want then you have to keep paying until you get it. For someone that has to have everything in the game that can mean burning a lot of cash. This is essentially just gambling, except you get virtually nothing of value when you win.

Looks like the game in question was released about 17 months ago so if he's been playing and paying since the beginning he has averaged ~$2,750 per day on the game. Even with gacha mechanics and pay to win items I still can't fathom how he could find enough things to buy to reach that level of spending.

As a teenager, I spent thousands of hours playing a popular mmorpg. When I got tired of the game, I looked into selling my character. Despite having then-unattainable items and high "status," the character was worth ~$500. I don't know how something could be worth $1 million+.

He spent over a million. It isn't worth that. Based on the result of this case it sounds like it's worth about $13k. Only one penny per dollar invested...

I'm so old that I remember a time when buying the game was the big expense related to gaming.  :P

Fuck playing something that keeps asking you for cash.

My Steam account is full of games that are either free or the expansion packs are offered as a bundle at 75% off because the game is 5 years old and no longer that popular.

I'm fond of a couple free phone based games-- Pokémon Go and Merge Dragons. Both have in-game purchases. But I'm not a fan of paying money for something virtual, so I won't spend money in either game. It's still a lot of high quality free entertainment although I see how I could level up more rapidly by throwing money at the game.

There are people willing to pay pennies (or fractions thereof) on the dollar for your super character. So I guess it has some resale value. That's why I used "virtually".

The idea of spending money on a character always blew my mind.

I understand buying a game. You're spending money in order to explore the creator's fun development. Buying characters for it... when you can build them... it's like cheating the game and yourself out of the experience. Sure you can buy a character that already has everything. But if you don't enjoy the game enough to build the character yourself, then you probably don't enjoy the game all that much, and why are you spending real (hard-earned) dollars on it?

Because some people need to feel superior to other people -- and since the old-fashioned ways of racism, bigotry, and misogyny can get you fired, this is an outlet for that need.

There is a line between "pay to get some cool <virtual> stuff" and "pay to win", I have stopped playing a few games after it became apparent that they were the latter.  From what I have read the industry is such that a small percent of a games players account for a very large amount of a games revenue via in game purchases.  Getting lots of people to pay 0.99$ to buy your game is not as good as getting a few people to pay 100$/month for virtual stuff.  Sucks but all you can do is choose what to play and support.

Earlier this year I looked into making cell phone games as a side hustle and the ROI was just horrible.  Best case 10 years in you can be doing OK from a long-tail and a large code base where you can crank out good new stuff with less effort.  I saw some guys talking about working for 6 months to release a game with 1k$ revenue and that being really good.

For the $1.4mil is there any way this person was just a really good gamer and 'earned' all those power-ups?

Seems like the guy who bought the character for $500 made a surprisingly good investment - $13,000 in damages is a 26x return! I can't for the life of me figure out what he could claim was damaged, though.

A good example of ethically done pay for cool stuff is Rainbow 6 Seige. You can buy all sorts of stuff, including 'characters' all with unjque special abilities but they've managed to avoid 'pay to win'.

Sadly (or maybe great news for my productivity) I've yet to find any mobilengamenthat was anything other than naked 'pay to win'. Monile games are a cess pit.

If you ever feel bad about your life, just remember that someone spent $1.4 million on a MMORPG character.

Confession: when I was a teenager I spent money on some rare Gaia Online monthly items. I know one of them was a mermaid's tail. I think I spent $6.00. Maybe $7.00? Then I felt dumb for spending money on something virtual and never bought anything again.
