I received a email from Zipcar today about some updates to the member contract.  While the email looked like a generic corporate email, the company has revised the third party liability which it provides to members.

Under the revised Section 6.1:

" Any such third party liability protection afforded will only be up to  the minimum financial responsibility limits required by the law of the  jurisdiction in which the accident occurs. The limit for bodily injury  sustained by any one person includes any claim for loss of that person's  consortium or services. "

In othe words, the company provided third party liability insurance will now only be up to the state mandated minimum. The amount for each state can be found at this link

Before this change, Zipcar provided minimum coverage for members joining after Aug 1, 2018. But, for members joined before that date, it offered higher liability coverage similar to those one would get under one's own insurance.

Under proior contract:

"will be protected against liability for causing bodily injury  or death to others or damaging the property of someone other than the  authorized driver and/or the Member up to limits of  $100,000/$300,000/$25,000 per accident." or "up to a combined single limit of $300,000 per  accident."

I believe this is a significant change as the state mandated minimum is clearly inadquate. Zipcar is doing a disservice its customers by not making an effort to publicize and educate the members on this change
