Surly 1x1. Simple, bulletproof, cheap, and a blast to ride. Mine is setup rigid with 27.5 in wheels and big ass 2.4" nevegals.

I also have a salsa ala carte that has gears for when I'm feeling like a complainypants but it doesn't see much action lately.

2015 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Comp 29....bought used for a great deal.

I love this bike it rolls over everything and really surprised how nimble it is for a 29er.  Before this bike I owned a 07 Cannondale Prophet which I loved but the Stump blows that bike out of the water.

The one I'm riding! :)

I've had quite a few, and enjoyed all of them. I like 29ers and fat bikes, but I think my next purchase will be a hardtail SS 27.5+. That works out to the same outside tire diameter as a 29er, but with a little more cush and a lot more traction. Haven't tried one yet, but everyone who has seems to think it really hits the sweet spot between 29er roll-over-it capability and fat-bike traction.

Probably have to get rid of a few bikes before I can add one though... not enough room! And before I get slammed for my non-mustachian consumption... I have paid for nearly all bike purchases in the last few years by having a hobby of... fixing up bikes. Works out nicely :)

2001 Trek 4500..... LOVED that bike.  Tiny and lightweight enough to fling around on trails (granted, these were hilly Florida trails -  nothing crazy!) and I loved it.  Unfortunately, it was stolen during vet school and replaced with a Giant Boulder SE... which I still ride, but have never enjoyed nearly as much.

I've only ever owned two (adult size) mountain bikes:
  • 2002 Gary Fisher (Trek) Wahoo (the one I use for actual trails)
  • c. 1989 Specialized Hard Rock (my commuter, with no suspension and slick tires)
They're both my favorite for their intended use, especially since there aren't any others to choose from!

Mountain bikes are my kryptonite.

Currently riding a Guerrilla Gravity Megatrail bigger-travel 27.5 and a Trek Stache 29+ (semi-fat) hardtail. Both sweet bikes. Couple of my previous favorites include the Banshee Phantom (short-travel aggro 29er) and Specialized Enduro 29 (possibly the finest big-travel mountain bike ever built if you have the terrain for it).

I have an older Specialized Enduro and it is my partner in crime.

Blatant: I haven't had an opportunity to ride a 29er Enduro, how does it compare to the 26er?

My friend has a 29er Enduro and loves it...it is a beast and awesome for downhill trails.

Schwinn Stingray complete with banana seat.
Best utility, all purpose bike ever made. period. No bells and whistles. They were not exactly pretty. But, they were bullet proof.
That was my favorite. But, the company went out of business on their 99th anniversary. What remains of them has nothing to do with the company I knew as a kid.

Current MTB is a custom 26 titanium hardtail. I ordered the frame from China and built it up with Shimano parts. Comes in right at 20 pounds, sans pedals.  I can climb like a billygoat with this thing.

My  first (and only): 1992 Schwinn [When They Were Still Good] Impact Pro retrofitted w/ RockShox front fork. Hardly state of the art, then or now, but great return on the $400 I paid for it way back when.

Before kids and mortgages and all the trappings of being a grown up took hold, my now-wife and I lived right on about 25 miles of singletrack. I loved my bikes and I went through quite a few of them. But there was one that stood head and shoulders above the crowd. It was a 2001 Ventana El Saltamontes. An absolutely gorgeous machine handcrafted in California that I built up piece by piece. Ahhh good times.

Very un-mustachian I know, but what a machine. And it was worth more than my car at the time. And my current car now that I think about it.

I work full time in a bike shop, so I go through a few bikes and get to ride a lot more. My current favourite is my Specialized Diverge, which isn't really a mountainbike, but you can ride it like one. The new 6fatty/27.5+ bikes are so great too, they live up to the hype in terms of pure fun, and if I lived anywhere with big enough trails I'd be all about an Enduro 29.

Devinci Atlas -- It just does everything right. Climbs really well thanks to very short chain stays for a 29'er, low weight, and DW link suspension. Descends just about anything and scares me with the speeds I can reach on rough, steep terrain. Sometimes I'm way behind the seat going through a steep rocky switchback just thinking to myself that I shouldn't be riding this. Then the bike just rolls on through it.

It's a roughly '92 Rocky Mountain Fusion with Rock Shox forks (I have the original forks too, should the Rocks fail).  It's obviously too small for me but I made it work.  It was given to me, and I commuted on it long enough to save enough money in gas to buy my Salsa Fargo, which I now use for commuting.  It only took 10 months of riding it to pay for the Fargo.

What a pity.Maybe its time to looking for a new girlfriend if the Giant is not your appetite.

Why you choose a China frame?

Ever tried one on a flow-style trail? The traction through corners is mind-boggling.

Not saying I'd ride one as my only bike... just that they can be loads of fun on certain rides!

I am a year-round biker but I never had a nice bike so even an entry-level mountain bike like a $500 Diamondback would be a step up from my current 10-year old hard-everything GT which I have been using rain, shine or snow for several years, even in the coldest Yellowknife winters at -45. I had the chance recently to try my friend's Ventana El Gordo fat bike on a trail, and i was blown away. However, I am not ready to spend $5,000 on a bike, or even $1000 for that matter.
