You guys are starting to rub off on me
« on: March 31, 2015, 10:19:51 AM »
Needed to order something form amazon the other day.  The item was $11 with free shipping if you order $35 or more.  Could not find anything else to order that I needed/wanted.  Ended up paying $18.50 total for my item plus shipping.  Still $16.50 less than if I ordered a min of $35 for free shipping.

Sigh.  I have $25 amazon gift card coming to me next month for some survey I did.  If I wasn't moving in few months, I have no idea what I would use it for.  With move, I'm sure I'll need some household items.

This is how one piles it up.  Remember MMM's post on how a millionaire is made $10 at a time?  Every buck counts.

Back when Amazon had "free shipping on orders of $25 or more" I purchased a $15 item and found myself $10 short of the minimum.

What to do...what to do...

In the 'cart' the total for the item + shipping came to about $24....grrrr....soooo...I purchased a giant pack of Charmin Toilet Paper for $10 and voila eligible now for free shipping. I considered it a win.

I had a similar experience the other day when ordering a gift for someone. Total came to $25.

It can be really hard not to go hunting for something superfluous to add to the cart, but in the end, you can take pride in knowing that you made the logical choice!

I've heard the toilet paper thing before and someone once mentioned buying cat food to round it out. Maybe I'll keep that in mind next time.

I'm in nyc too and I always find some grocery or drugstore item that's cheaper there than at the store. Guess it depends how savvy you are with coupons or costco or something.

I am pretty good at finding good sales around me (Long Island) between loss leaders and BJ's.  Haven't really seen much of my everyday stuff that would be cheaper on amazon.  Will have to look again in the future

Took me a LONG time to learn this.  Took even long longer to stand up for this concept with non-believers.  I'm on the right track now, thankfully.

In such circumstances, I have always been able to find some staple item(s) that would make sense for me to buy since I could store them and sooner rather than later use them in my normal daily life.  And, yea, toilet paper certainly would qualify there. (!)
