Word of the day: Plutomania
« on: September 26, 2014, 07:52:53 AM »

I thought today's missive from the ever insightful AWAD e-mail might be of interest:

plutomania

PRONUNCIATION:
(ploo-tuh-MAY-nee-uh)

MEANING:
noun: An obsession with money or wealth.

ETYMOLOGY:
From Greek pluto- (wealth) + -mania (excessive enthusiasm or craze). Earliest documented use: 1652.

USAGE:
"Plutomania became rare and almost extinct in the days of the Commonwealth. People lost the habit of valuing possessions over personal relationships."
W. Warren Wagar; A Short History of the Future; University of Chicago Press; 1989.

I think it is interesting that despite the emphasis on personal relationships, of experiences and anti-consumerism, plutomania remains a driving force of this board and mustachianism.  Kind of a funny thing!

This particular paradox has been widely discussed here before.  Despite MMM preaching a life free of monetary concerns, his proposed method of achieving that goal is to focus exclusively on money until you reach FI.

Imagine a blog about how to never do laundry again, but to get there you had to learn everything there was to know about laundry and do eight loads a day for ten years.  All about bleaches and detergents and colorfast dyes, about manufacturer recalls on specific models and how to test your tap water to choose the right chemicals for the fabric types you're washing that day.  Do that for ten years and then you too can never worry about laundry again!  We'll call it "mustavoidlaundry.com" to remind people that they're doing all of this laundry so that they don't have to do laundry.
