Will VT and ME pay people to move there?

Shortage of young people in VT and ME.

Would you move there? Will they put together immigration policies to get people there? I imagine people from South and Central America would deal with being there if they'll deal with the weather in NY.

Edited to add: I don't think these states have something to pay cash to everyone, the way Alaska does, but they can offer tax breaks.

Vermont is actively doing this, to an extent, with reimbursement of moving expenses for remote workers who relocate to VT.

My guess is that they'd get more young people if they made it easier to find childcare and affordable housing. I have met some folks who have used the program to relocate though, and they seem happy here. My guess is this program will not be continued for very long.

With only 620k people, they'd see a difference if just 20k new people came in, particularly to work in healthcare and service type jobs.

I would imagine that the lack of younger workers makes childcare scarce/expensive as well. Catch-22?

Refugees are going to Portland, ME: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/23/us/portland-maine-african-migrants.html

Quote
PORTLAND, Me. — Through the winter, the families streamed into Portland, bringing stories of violence and persecution in their home countries in central Africa. Portland’s shelter for homeless families soon filled to capacity, so the city put mats on the floor of a Salvation Army gym for 80 more people.

Then that, too, wasn’t enough. This month, 250 migrants from Africa arrived in this northeastern city of roughly 67,000 residents in the span of just a week, overflowing the overflow space and forcing Portland to hastily convert a basketball arena into an emergency shelter. Urgent calls went out for interpreters who could speak French, Portuguese and Lingala, a language spoken in the Democratic Republic of Congo. City Council meetings were given over to grappling with how Portland would pay for all of this — and the possibility that still more migrants might be coming.

It is a bit of a mystery in Maine, one of the oldest and whitest states in the country, how Portland has become a focal point for a sudden surge of migrants, mostly from Angola and Congo, who are seeking asylum.

Portland has a unique Community Support Fund designated to help with refugee resettlement: https://www.pressherald.com/2019/06/24/stephen-tabitha-king-among-big-donors-as-asylum-seekers-fund-tops-500000/

States have no say in who gets to immigrate to the US. That's the purview of the federal government.
