Where to get cork board?
« on: September 14, 2016, 11:42:17 AM »
Any ideas on where to get cork board that I put on the wall for message/notes center?

Everything I was able to google is either too expensive or too thin (1/4 inch).  I think I need about 9-12 sq feet, but I'll need to measure exactly when I get home.

It has to be 1/2 inch thick, otherwise push pins will go through it and into the wall.

Also, what is the best way to attach it to the wall in order to be able to take it down later without damaging walls.  I'm renting, and I don't want to have to repair walls when I move out.

Cork sheets of various sizes and thickness can be purchased from Grainger or McMaster Carr.
If you want to take it down later, I'd probably glue it to a plywood or similar backer board using construction adhesive, then hang the whole assembly with fasteners.   You may be better off just buying some cork bulletin boards from Hobby Lobby or similar.

Similar to what Fishindude said:
I would buy cork tiles (available on amazon, McMasterCarr, etc).  Cut a piece of 1/4" ply to whatever size you want and then cut and glue the tiles to the front.  voila!  Instant custom cork board for under $20.  If you want it to look finished edge the entire thing with some 1/4" x 1/2" strips.
I did this to make a truly massive cork-board 'runner' through our kitchen (8' x 1').
You can hang the cork board using normal picture-framing hardware since you are renting.

I say do it yourself.

You could start with the acorn: http://seedman.com/oak.htm  but I expect you are in some kind of a hurry and willing to splash out the ten bux to steal a couple years' march on the growing process:  https://www.rollingrivernursery.com/products/865/65/natives-tree-seedlings/tree-seedlings/cork-oak-quercus-suber-detail.

In a few years you'll be able to wheel the potted oak in and out of the house to pin things up and get plenty of sunlight and water when you aren't sticking stuff up.

As you can see, you will have plenty of depth for driving pins of any length you choose:

Where did you get your cork that it was only $20?  The cheap once I see on Amazon and other sites are still around $40-60 and they are 1/4 inch thick.  The 1/2 inch thick is about 2.5 times the price.

Pfffft.  Buying a seed?  A pro would find a cork tree in the wilderness and then camp beside it until it begins to drop seeds, then pick one up.

well here's a set of four 12" x 12" x1/4" for $5.  You could double-up the 1/4" or put it on a backerboard.  I'd imagine PVC foam board would be a pretty good backer as long as you aren't trying to make something more than 6sqft.

Would you consider an alternative?  I'm in the same boat, renting, and was debating how to create something similar though my thought was to cover a wood frame with cloth.  Now I'm thinking of using painter's tape instead to "tack" up notes.  Might need to use something like Frog Tape Sensitive as whatever the last landlord used for paint is crap.  Faint traces comes of when wiping down the wall with a paper towel soaked with water.

Check your local art/craft supply store - AC Moore, Michael's, etc.

FWIW McMaster-Carr has everything imaginable but everything is shipped over night and everything can be had for a cheaper price. I use them for work alot but for myself personally - I find it elsewhere.
