Moto G5, I don't remember, about $200. It was great until I dropped it in the toilet. Then I had to reset it three or four times in as many weeks due to bootloop and was about ready to give up. That was last July and it seems to be fine again since.

This is my second Moto G. I like their cameras for the price range. I haven't looked into the G7, though, because this one is working fine.

Moto G5+, my first smartphone so nothing to compare to, but not having any problems.
Happy to use Waze for maps to commute, it hooks up with my Bluetooth headphones and
a speaker I have. Nice to stream my internet radio. Camera works great.

Same phone (Moto G5+), basically the same comments.  I don't think the camera is great, but other than that it is vastly more than I need.  The battery still lasts all day and it hasn't showed down at all over the roughly 2 years I've had it.  I hope it lasts a few more years because I have no need to upgrade yet.

I have a ZTE Z55BL. It's cheap ( I think I paid $120) and dependable. Camera is ok, not great. Does everything I need and does not cause me any trouble.

Moto x4. Bought 2 about a year ago for, I think, $250 each but got $250 in free Google fi service with it so net cost of about $125 each.

Works great.

I also, temporarily, have a pixel 3 xl 128gb that I paid $999 for and got a $999 travel gift card for. It's free as far as I'm concerned. I've had to keep it for a bit before deactivating but will sell it soon for a profit. Anyway, the screen and camera are is nice but fingerprint reader placement is annoying and I'd value it as worth maybe $50 more than my x4.

I am not into phones! Haven't been for perhaps 9 years now.

I've pretty much got everyone in the family using LG G5s. Still a good phone in 2019... at $50-100 they are a great deal. Replaceable battery, SD slot... What's not to like?

Seems the Moto g is the frugal phone of choice, I actually have the Moto G5+ bought used for $100 but am considering an upgrade since it is getting a little slow mainly when browsing or opening apps and I held onto my last phone way too long (original Moto g) not realizing how bad the performance was really getting..

My general rule of thumb is that I don't want to spend more than $100/year on phones.  So I'll pay up to $300 for one that will last me three years.  I would not pay $999 for anything, because I think the chance of any smartphone being viable a decade from now are basically nil.  There are lots of ~$150 refurbs out there, but they generally seem to get unusable within two years, so I have found the $200-300 range to be the most useful and least wasteful.

I agree, sub 300 seems to be best value, I also find used phones to be better value as second hand phones drop in value considerably compared to the same phone new, so you can get much higher spec used phones for cheaper than a lower quality budget or medium spec phone

Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact.

Bought for 300 euros on black friday. Normal price is 500 euros.

Pros:
- Waterproof
- Fast
- Good camera
- Memory card (bought myself)
- Modern Android version
- Sturdy Gorilla glass. No glass on the back side.
- Good phone signal receiving compared to my old phone. I think it was a very good phone for what I paid for it.

Cons:
- Little choice in silicon phone covers for low price. I ended up with a teenage pink stars silicon cover. Looks totally ridiculous, but does the job very well. I drop the phone on the ground several times a week and it works just fine. The cover does make the phone clumpy, though.
- The fingerprint sensor works very well for my right hand, but not well for my left hand. I have rescanned the finger in my left hand several times, but it is still difficult to switch on my phone with my left hand. That is a bit impractical when I am hiking and hold something in my right hand.
- Audio adapter is needed for my standard headphones. The adapter was provided with the phone and it works.

I'm on the Moto bandwagon. I got a Moto X4 in November to use with Mint Mobile, it's been great so far for the $230 price. And now it looks like it's on sale for $150, which is a ridiculously great deal.

Prior to the X4, I had the Moto X 2nd Gen for over 3 years on Republic Wireless. Only upgraded because I wanted to switch to Mint Mobile.

iPhone SE for $199.  It's a great phone for the price, but I don't have a lot of apps on it, so not sure how it compares to more expensive iPhones.  I mostly use it for an actual phone and for email.   Prior phone was a refurbished iPhone 4s that was a hand me down from my teen.  It was fine, but it got glitchy on conference calls otherwise I'd still have it.

iPhone X. Free - won it. It does everything I need it to do — telephone, text messaging, surfing the MMM forums, apps to order groceries, email, eLibrary app...

If I had to buy a phone, I’d probably pick something cheaper, but since this one was free, it’ll do.

I have an iPhone 6. Bought it in 2016 and still working for me. The Siri Shortcuts functionality (previously the Workflow app) is one of the main reasons I prefer an iPhone.

Samsung Rugby, 2012 for $99 (pair, spouse and mine).  It's waterproof and has awesome battery life (typically get 3-4 days).  Flip-phone.  Contract is so old and grandfathered that we pay $20/mo for two phones with unlimited call/text.

Actually prefer that it's not a smart-phone (had one, ditched it) - we've got an iPad, laptops and an iPod touch (with VoIP) - not much a smartphone could bring us that we don't already have, and frankly I hated all the interruptions and limitations of the smartphone.

Got an iPhone 8 last year.  Switched to T-Mobile for their military plan and they had a BOGO deal where they gave you a VISA gift card.  Paid $700 each for the phones and then applied the $700 gift card to my account so essentially paid $350 each.  Had an iPhone 5S for several years prior to that.

iPhone 6s that I got paid $50 to have. ;)

Those were the days when you got a phone for $200 with a 2 year contract with the carrier. I sold my previous 5s for $250. I guess now you have to buy the $1000+ phone and I hate the new larger sizes anyway so 6s till it dies!

Huawei P9 Lite. Got it about 3.5 to 4 years ago for about 150 - 200 euro. Its still in great shape, battery life is starting to go. Only upgrade was an external 64GB SD card for about 15 quid.

Good solid phone that I havent managed to break even though I drop it all the time. Excellent camera.

I have a google pixel 2 XL. Great phone. It was $480 on swappa, half of the original price a year after it came out. It was a warranty replacement and still sealed in the box. I'll keep it at least until the battery starts getting bad (3 years for my previous phone - a google nexus 6p).

Moto G5 plus (64GB model) with a 128 GB micro SD card.  I got sick of running out of space so I went total over kill.  I've not had to delete a single thing off my phone since I bought it in June '17, and based on how much space I have left I don't think I ever will (I'm using 34/64GB internal, and 15/128 GB on SD).  All in all with the screen protector, case, micro SD card, and shipping charges It was a little under $400.  Much more than I originally wanted to spend, but I've been pretty happy with it.  I do seem to be running the battery down.  Not sure if it's a shitty battery, or I'm just running some super battery intensive games and apps on it all the time.  I generally keep it plugged in at least part of the day while at work to keep the battery topped off so I don't end up running out.  If i'm not playing games on it, or streaming music or watching videos, and just use it as a normal phone, I can usually go until bedtime without having to charge it.  It's rare that I go a whole day without using it though, so I generally do the mid day top off.  Yes I would recommend it, and will probably consider a newer moto phone when I need to replace this one, hopefully not for at least a couple more years.

Just got a Pixel 3 within the last couple weeks. I paid $600 for it over 24 equal payments at 0%. It is the first time that I've owned a current model phone.

My old phone was a Motorola that I had for 4-5 years. The battery(which is normally the reason that I get a new phone) still worked great but some apps were starting to run really slowly and some would not work at all. Every other phone I've ever owned was also a Motorola and I've always like them.

Is this new phone great? Compared to the 5 year old phone? Of course, it is outstanding from my perspective. I have no idea if it is any different than any other phone currently available though.

Moto G6 Play. I had a flip phone for several years, and switched back to a Smart phone. I think it was $200, and it does way more than I need it to. The cameras are nice for taking pictures and videos of the kids, and all the apps are the same for any android phone, so I'm not missing out on anything even though I rarely use any apps other than the maps.

I bought a refurbished Samsung Galaxy S7 for $250 when I had to turn in my iPhone 8 upon leaving my old job. It's... fine. I owned iPhones for years, always paid for by my employers, and now that I just get a phone allowance, I can't stomach buying a $900+ phone. I wish I liked the Android platform more, but I'm adapting.

Lots of people have mentioned replacing their phones because the battery life is suffering.

You do know that you can buy new phone batteries for like $15, right?  As long as your phone offers a user replaceable battery (sorry iphone suckers) then battery life should never be the reason to replace your device.

Which isn't to say there might not be other good reasons.  Depending on what you use it for, your phone eventually becomes a security risk because manufacturers stop offering updates to old systems.  And if you want to run new games, then a four year old phone is probably going to struggle.  But if you're just using it as a phone and GPS with occasional data access to look stuff up?  You can get lots of former flagship phones for less than $100 with a brand new battery installed, and it will make phone calls and access the internet just fine.

iPhone 6s (released in 2015) which I recently got (maybe 2 months ago) on ebay for $170.  I splurged on the most storage (128gb) since I take alot of photos/videos of the kids.

The main thing for me is to lower recurring costs so I have a redpocket $60/yr plan: 100min/100sms/500mb/month.

Asus Zenfone 3. I think the current version is 5 or 6.

Love, love, love the camera. Huge battery so I only charge it a couple times per week if I want. I try to resist charging past 80% to make the battery age better. Easy, I just plug it in when I wake up in the morn and by the time I am ready to walk out the door, it's regained what I used the day before.

Asus offers a number of free apps that I really like. You can add or remove them. Not stuck with them. It has updated the OS a couple of times, the Asus software several times too. Of course all the app updates.

MicroSD card slot, dual SIM if I wanted to use that. Works really great. Will replace it with something from the same brand and model next time. Bought a generic black flip cover for $12 and the phone has not gotten a scratch since I bought it. Got it new but I suspect it was old stock b/c the current version at the time was 5 perhaps.

I see it as an lesser loved brand here in the USA so there seems to be some good deals. I have a Tracphone account. I quit buying minutes and texts b/c I have so many banked. I have service all the way to next year at this time. Works out to be about $10 a month.

Calling @Daley for insight on this topic, because I'd like to learn something.

@sol - These days, my go to recommendation for people who want smartphones is the Moto E/G series. One of the few left with a kinda user replaceable battery and near stock Android, plus if push comes to shove, they officially let you unlock the bootloader so you can keep the phone working past the official software support window with stuff like LineageOS (or if you want to extract Google's thumbs from your daily life), though you no longer have a secure bootloader at that point. If you don't want a user replaceable battery or the ability to load other Android ROMs, the HMD-Nokia 2/3 series is decent as well.

Personally, I don't keep up much with this stuff anymore, and I've never spent more than $75 on a used phone over the years. I dislike Android about as much as I do iOS, and the day my now four year old $30 Lumia 640 stops working is likely the last day I carry a mobile phone (still kicking, and I have spare parts). Given Microsoft stops updating the OS at the end of the year (not a huge deal, worst case, I just turn off mobile data) and AT&T is twilighting their 3G network in about three years, that might happen sooner than later. 4G VoLTE capable handsets don't have great battery life (even the feature phones) which is a non-starter for me, and I'm absolutely not in love with the idea of owning and carrying around FR2 5G tech. That doesn't give me many options left in this country far sooner than later. Shame the legacy networks can't and won't be preserved like they are in Europe (outside of T-Mobile's miserably tiny skeleton 2G network)... but that's a rant for another day.

Samsung A5 - a few years old now.  Paid about $500 CAD to purchase outright, definitely a mid-range phone.  Previously we had many iterations of Moto G's and they worked decently well, but when one of our businesses required a lot more phone use and additional apps for scheduling and taking payments etc the Moto G's were not cutting it.  The Samsung has been way faster and the camera/video is fantastic (compared to what we had before.)  I have never had an issue yet, nor has my DH who switched to one a couple years ago as well.  I no longer need all the functionality, and have been debating going back to the Moto G's when this one bites the dust, or just getting a flip phone again.

Asus Zenfone 3. I think the current version is 5 or 6.

I got the Zenfone 5 for free through Verizon and literally could not get it to work correctly. It would completely lose signal when I left my home or office WiFi network and couldn't connect to the 4G for some reason. It would work fine if I reset it, but if I forgot, I'd suddenly look at my phone 4 hours later, restart it, and have missed a bunch of messages. I'm available pretty much 24/7 for work, and it was not cutting it. Verizon just told me it was a "known issue" with zero resolution. It was also my first Android so I thought the interface just sucked. I switched to a Galaxy S7 and the interface was MUCH better and no weird connection issues.

Just thought I'd put an FYI out there for folks looking at the new Zenfones.

I've got the Galaxy S7.  It's now just over 2 years old, and working fine.  It cost me too much, as I got it on a lease plan, and it was poorly explained to me at the time that the lease was such that I couldn't keep the phone at the end of the lease even after paying for it, as it was locked to the network.  Much complaining on my behalf and I got out of the contract for about $30.

I would look at another Android phone next, in another 2 or 3 years time.  Probably a Nokia would be my current bet.

Spouse & I just upgraded to a pair of Moto G5 pluses, bought new today in a BOGO promotion for $250, so $125 each.

my go to recommendation for people who want smartphones is the Moto E/G series. One of the few left with a kinda user replaceable battery

What's the catch on the "kinda" replaceable battery?  Because the official specs on the G6 and the G7 both say it's not replaceable.  Do they just mean I have to take it apart?

I have an LG Exalt. Apparently there is a newer version if you buy one right now, but the one I have works fine. Flip phones fo' lyfe.

bought-used Galaxy S7, but wow, those used S9's are getting to prices that are tempting.

Google Pixel 3: $0 or $800 depending on how you look at it.. (I got $800 in airfare gift cards for buying it for $800)

I don't like it. The camera is good, but not as good as reviews say. That, and I miss having a headphone jack.

I'll probably sell it once I am allowed to, bringing my cost down, and making a "profit" considering the airfare which we would use anyway. I'll probably replace it with a midrage, maybe a moto G, or something strange and not too expensive like the Blloc Zero 18 (Or a KaiOS phone?)

Moto g6. When my old phone died, I just asked my kid for one of his old ones. No idea what it cost, but I'm  sure he got a deal on it. We have Metro PCS, so no phones are "included" in our super cheap plan.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
