What is your current daily routine? And your ideal?
« on: May 04, 2017, 10:56:52 AM »
I'm making some life changes at the moment, and one of them is that we're moving to a new house in a new area in a month. Seems like a good time to try to change my daily routine when everything's going to be new anyway.

So what's your current daily routine? And what would your ideal one (post-FIRE, if you're not already) be?

I try and exercise every day. Makes all things seem more possible.
And I don't leave chores for the weekend; I try and work them in during the week.

Ideal: this current routine plus cook better tasting meals more efficiently.

My morning routine is from the book the miracle morning. Except that I am to lazy for the sports part at the moment.

I like that I already accomplished something before I go to work. It gives me a very good  feeling to start days with this routine.

I'm going to do the same thing once we get to Orlando.  Life reset!

Current: wake up as soon as I'm not tired. Eat when I'm hungry (mix of eating out and eating in). Deal with the few responsibilities I have like cleaning and dealing with a semi-passive business. Play video games and read. Sleep when I'm tired. Travel occasionally.

Ideal: Same except zero responsibility :)

I get up at 5:55 (and I'm usually awake before then, anyway.) Coffee, listen to Morning Edition. Feed the cats, and do morning chores and pack a lunch for dh and put on some clothes and I'm out the door at 7:45.

(I work part time, I have summers off, and I like my job a lot.)

I'm done at school at 12:30 or 1-ish, and I take a walk and run any errands I have in the neighborhood.

Go home, have a cup of tea and read the paper and ... whatever. Now that it's spring I usually go out and do some weeding or putter around in the yard. Today I did some laundry.

I start cooking dinner around 4, dh comes home and we eat, I clean up and run the dishwasher. By 7, I'm in my comfy chair with my book and my knitting. LOL

So, definitely not an exciting routine, but it's what I like.

Variations - about once/week we go out in the evening and Do Something.

Almost embarrassed to post this cause it's quite horrible from a work/life balance point of view

5:30am - alarm goes off, hit snooze a couple time and and get up shower and dressed

6:15am - catch the bus from the camp to the office (living in a mining camp)

6:30am-5pm - meetings, data anaylsis and other stuff

5:15pm - get back to camp, hit gym

6:15pm - eat supper

6:45pm - back in room and a bit of netflix

8:30pm - wind down for bed

Repeat Monday-Thursday and head back to real life on Friday's at 3pm.

As for ideal. I'll list it as ideal at current age which is the accumulation phase. Ideal would be 32-40 hours of work a week as opposed to the 55 done now. At home every night and off work by 3:30 everyday to still leave lots of time for golf after work or enjoying the sunshine.

I've been thinking about routines - specifically disruption of them. I'll answer your second question first by saying that I wish my routine was much more flexible than it is. Right now. it's incredibly optimized and predictable, which is great from a saving money standpoint. Problem is, whenever my routine is disrupted (guests over, after work event, short trip, etc.) I feel like it takes me way longer than it should to recover.

5:20am - Wake up, shower, get dressed, eat, pack a lunch

6:00am - Leave for work

6:50am - Arrive at work, start my day ~7:00am

~12:00pm - Take a lunch walk

3:30pm - Head home

4:15pm - Arrive home, start working on dinner

~5:15pm - Eat dinner, go for a walk/bike ride, play with the kid, chores

7:30pm - Get toddler ready for bed

8:30pm - Unwind from the day

10:00pm - Bed.

In a perfect world (post-FIRE):

6:30am - Wake up, get ready for the day (whatever that might entail)

~misc. chores/hobbies/projects/exercise~

12:00pm - Lunch

~nap, misc. chores/hobbies/projects/extended meal prep time~

5:30pm - Dinner

~Family time/outdoor time/leisure (book, movie, etc.)~

10:30pm - Bed

Ooh, interesting! I've reserved the book at the library - looking forward to it!

Mine is a lot like undercover's. I love it! I guess it's basically not having a routine at all :)

The part about waking when I'm done sleeping, and engaging with the world only a couple of hours after that, is key for me.

I also host or cohost 2-5 community events each week. Much of my quiet time is spent moving toward those, which creates a nice balance for me in terms of stimulation, and then winding down from those.

My long-time laptop has recently left the picture, and I'm considering not replacing it. Not having one has already changed my routine a lot, and I like the impact. I simply do a lot less free labour and a lot less tweaking. That feels positive.

I actually did an exercise recently where I wrote out both of these! It was suggested by a NYC designer on the rich roll podcast. For me current:

Wake up 5-5:30am
Immediately meditate to get the day started right, usually only 10-15 min
Do some indoor spin bike if I have enough energy
5:30-6am Jump online and start working
7:30am Start prepping kids for school
8:00am drop off first kid
8:30am Emails
9:00am Drop of second kid
9:30am Arrive at office and work straight through
2:00PM Pick up first kid
3:00PM Pick up 2nd kid
3:15-4pm Park or some kid of fun for kids
4:00pm back home and let kids watch some netflix while I do a little more work
5:30pm Wife back home and I can finish up work strong.
6:30pm Cook dinner for kids and family time
8:00pm Kids to bed, some house cleanup
8:30pm-9pm Maybe some netflix ro reading and then collapse.

This is normal, but sometimes I get in some gym sessions our outside fun with kids at 4-5pm if no pressing work stuff. This is also temp till my wife is done with school.

Ideal:

Wake up around 6 or 7, meditate
Make a nice breakfast for me and the family
Get kids off to school
Do some remote work
Get outside for biking, snowboarding, etc. or date with my wife
Chill back at the house or meet family/friends
Pick kids up and hang out/family activities
Make dinner or alternately BBQ with friends
Kid homework, chill, etc.
Read, movies, hang with wife

A lot of the same stuff but in a much less compressed and relaxing way.

Current typical week day:

Wake up
Get ready for work
10-15 minutes of something fun, time permitting (hobby, reading, etc)
10-15 minutes letting the dog do her thing
30 minute commute to work
Make tea
Emails
Actual work
Walk dog (she goes to work with me)
Eat lunch
More work
30 minute drive home
Make dinner
Eat dinner
Chores or other responsibilities
Relax/Fun with whatever is leftover. If no time is left, screw sleep and do half an hour anyway or I start really wanting to stab my coworkers for doing things like saying, "Hello!"
Sleep

I work from home at least one day a week which is similar except without the pants, people, and the commute. I call it my cubicle sanity day.
Weekends are whatever is on the calendar, whatever more time consuming things need to get done, preferably some sort of progress on some sort of project, and as much introvert recovery time as I can manage to squeeze in.

Ideally, I would like to have as little routine as possible. Given my preferences on weekends and vacations I will most likely have a routine of making tea or coffee and having quiet me time followed by a complete lack of structure where I do whatever I feel like that day unless there is a Thing We Have To Do and then sleep. I will eat when I am hungry. Bedtime will be when I am tired.

I feel panicky when I read some of the daily routines.
I see why I stopped doing them.

Let's see:
Wake up at 3:30 on gym days or 4:30 on non-gym days. Gym days are dictated by my level of pain which, unfortunately, has been very high lately, so they have been few and far between.

Shower and get dressed for work by 5:40. On non-gym days, that gives me about an hour of reading time. At the gym, I listen to audio books or podcasts.

Eat breakfast, feed and play with dog, pack lunch, and read newspaper by 6:30.

Get to work by 7:00.

Read work e-mails, review lessons and materials as needed, meet with students, make copies as needed, update grades, grade essays, etc. by 7:50.

Teach 7:50-2:40.

Meetings, after-school tutorials 3-4:00 3x/week. Doctor appts or go straight home other two.

4/5-6: Quality time with husband and dog. :)

Go to bed early because it's the only time I sleep. No matter what, I will be awake from about midnight to three am.

Weekends: The same except that during work hours I read, socialize, do chores if my body allows, write, grade as needed, grocery shop, meal prep, go to the theater, deal with week's mail. Sometimes I teach or attend trainings/conferences.

Things I want to change:

I would like to meditate daily (I could do this while awake in the middle of the night).
I would like to find some exercise I can do when my joint pain is absurdly high.

Written out like this, it may sound boring, but you have to understand I have the most exciting, rewarding, and challenging job I could ever imagine, so it's really quite fun. :)  I also have chronic pain, fatigue, and brain fog, so it's important I don't overschedule myself. I can always add more on good days.

I've sat down a couple of times to reply to this thread, but what I've realized is that the bulk of my day has no routine. The usual pattern is something like Get up about 7, sit in the hot tub on the back deck with my husband and watch the birds/talk about our plans for the day. Breakfast (outside on our deck this time of year.)Check email, throw in a load of wash, prep for dinner.  Walk the dogs (usually 3 miles.) After that -- anything goes. Yesterday we ran errands and did yard work. Today we're working in the yard all day. The day before that we went to the local hot springs in the morning and I wrote in the afternoon. Lunch is whatever we put together on our own -- often leftovers. I usually try to write 4 to 6 hours a day, 4 days a week. He does stuff around the house or various hobbies or reading. Late afternoon we sit on the deck with a light snack and sometimes cocktails (though we try to limit this to 3-4 days a week). Dinner we make ourselves, another walk for the dogs. In the evenings we often listen to a baseball game while we putter around with house chores or work on the jigsaw puzzle we always having going. I may write more or mess around on the internet. On nights with no ball game we read. Evenings we often call family or friends out of state -- this probably happens a couple times a week.
