What I did with my most recent raise
« on: December 09, 2016, 08:55:11 AM »
I recently got a 3% bump associated with taking a different position in my company. Normally when I get raises I figure out how much extra I get per week (I'm paid weekly), and then increase my Vanguard weekly contribution accordingly. This time though I split the increase in half, put half towards Vanguard, and took the other half and set up a monthly contribution to two charities: Planned Parenthood and the ACLU. I am still numb and in partial denial about the unfortunate events of last month. I have been practicing an extreme form of a low-information diet: pretty much my only outside interaction is this forum and the occasional French news podcast. I can't deal with civic engagement but hopefully my very small contribution will help.

I like this.  I have recently upped some of my charitable contributions and it has certainly made me feel pretty good about myself.

I've also been trying to stay off of social media.  I can't handle the extreme comments from either side.  It's so annoying.  I was hoping after the election things would have died down a bit.

I'm cutting back on my charitable contributions so I can invest more.  I'm afraid we've got rough times ahead and you can't take care of others until you've solidified your own position.

Yeah, the social media stuff is still crazy.  I'm annoyed at both sides now.  Neither side is handling it well.  May end up unfriending a lot of close friends just so I don't have to see them spewing their garbage all the time.

I find this rather interesting... None of my friends ever share news or political stories (real or fake). Usually it's either food snaps or holiday snaps. But never news.

Just unfollow the bad apples and problem solved?

I'm with Marty, maybe it's the fact that he's from the Land of Oz and me from the Great White North but the amount of political propaganda on Facebook is there but not really all that frequent. The amount of short videos from "Tasty" is staggering though (but I watch/enjoy most of them).

Is culling the bad apples an option or is it really that pervasive that it would require a full Facebook shutdown? Just curious.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
