What goals do you have taped to your bathroom mirror?
« on: September 11, 2017, 08:36:27 AM »
I've never done that before but I want to start.  I'm thinking of something like Warren Buffet's 5 rules for investing or some other encouragement to up my saving rate.  I'm maxing out my SIMPLE but I know I could throw more into my Roth or student loans if I just made better decisions.  But here I lay, just hemorrhaging money.  Does anyone do this for a daily reminder of one's goals?  Any other suggestions?

I don't have goals, per se. I have a piece of paper taped next to my monitor labeled "primary missions":

  • Maintain an iron-clad marriage
  • Strive for financial independence
  • Leave a legacy for our family

I'm not really sure what that last one actually entails yet, but that's a journey for after we reach #2.

I do a weekly email to my wife detailing everything we spent that wasn't gas/groceries/core "fixed" budget.  It also includes a running tally of our personal purchases and how much personal money we have left for the year.  Daily was too onerous, monthly wasn't enough.

So far I find this helps both of us ensure our spending is on important items.

We only have 1 bathroom so we don't want our guests seeing our notes to ourselves about our goals lol.  It's the residential version of "employees must wash hands".  Now that I see they need a sign, I think there might have been/might still be a problem with the hand washing issue...

I don't have goals taped to the mirror, but I do have a reminder: "I am unstoppable and I do ALL the hard things".  It basically reminds me not to be a wimp and do shit that is going to move the needle even if it is super uncomfortable.

By my computer monitor

"People are always blaming circumstances for what they are. I do not believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they cannot find them, they make them."

At the moment, I have a post-it note that says "One day at a time".  Not the most inspiring quote, but it's appropriate for the shitty situation I'm going through at the moment.

I do the monthly charts as suggested in Your Money or Your Life and post them to our bathroom mirror.  I have one for invested assets, net worth, income vs. expenses, and cabin payoff.  I've found them extremely useful as a daily reminder of our goals and progress made.

"Floss You Fool!".         ... It works

I had a dentist tell me I should only floss between the teeth I want to keep.

"Follow your bliss" - Joseph Campbell's advice to his students when asked how to pursue their own heroes journey. It means different things to me in different stages of life. Those three simple words have more and more profound meaning the more I think about them and tailor them to situations.

My goals aren't quite taped to my bathroom mirror, but for the last two years I have printed off and framed my annual goals and stuck them on my bedroom wall.

This years goals are below.

1. Save 100% of my salary*
2. Get a promotion at work / improve my end of year review score
3. Buy a house in the most cost efficient way

*whilst it's pretty impossible to achieve a 100% savings rate without starving to death or being a full time hunter gatherer living in the woods, I aim to accumulate savings each year that total 100% of my full time salary. I've achieved this over the last two years by having one or two side businesses / money generating ideas and using that money to live, allowing me to save all of my main salary.

Next to my office monitor: "ODCTR"

Nobody ever asks what it means, but if they do, it's "One day closer to retirement."

If they ask, I hope to get "the look" after I answer!  :)

The first job I ever had was at a business that did electricity line install work. It was private enterprise, but essentially quasi government because their only customers were various government entities regional & state departments, very pro union. The operations team were 10-15 fairly crusty ex-linesmen, it was where the bumped guys who had done 15-25 years of install, were fairly beat up physically but not at a point where they could retire yet.  every single one of them had a counter app on their desktop listing the number of days until retirement, their ENTIRE department.

Its actually part of what got me interested in FI/RE, some of their numbers were up in the thousands and pretty depressing given the age and physical condition of some of them... Still, one day closer every day!
