What do you want in an FAQ from this site?
« on: July 24, 2013, 09:40:09 AM »
As the title says. Toss them out there, perhaps add what sub forum you think your question would belong to to help with information organization.

Two threads that are going on right now that seem to be asked in different ways from time to time would be how to calculate a savings rate and what to do if you don't want to invest in the stock market.  The second one might need two separate answers, one for the liberal "wall street is evil and I don't want my money to support Wal Mart and Monsanto" crew, and another for the conservative "stocks are only going up because of the Fed and Sharia socialism is going to ruin everything" folks.  (I'm overgeneralizing, but you know what I mean.)

How do you calculate a Savings Rate?

Should I pay off my X% interest rate mortgage?

Where should I save my money?

Where do babies come from?

All of these probably in the Investor Alley.

I agree with this. Another community I'm in has moderators who catch virtually all repeat threads and merge topics, but I think they have paid mods. In the absence of that, a sticky section for repeat questions would be much appreciated by those of us who have been around awhile.

Should I invest in my 401k?

People are always asking because they don't know about 72t distributions, assuming they will have to pay penalties to access money if they retire early.

But is that necessary?  I would be ok with multiple threads asking about savings rate.  It's good to have fresh perspectives as the membership changes, and the topics can change.  There shouldn't be 3 a week, but we shouldn't just end all repeat threads, either.

I don't intend this FAQ to be an end all be all. It will just redirect to other posts for the most part. Other people much more articulate than myself have already done a good job answering these and from more perspectives than just my opinion.

I'm not worried about the style of output. I'm worried about what people can foresee as inputs. What gets asked frequently?

Should I rent or buy?

Should I pay off mortgage or invest?

How do I use the MMM calculation to calculate years to FI if my net worth is not zero?

My SO is not on board. What should I do?

My experience on that other forum is that the conversation just continues in one whopping big thread on the topic--new topic is merged to be the next post on page 5, people post some more and get the benefit of seeing what was suggested earlier.

In addition to "How do I use the MMM calculation to calculate years to FI if my net worth is not zero?" I'd add "How does this work if I'm not making 60K+ etc?"

Best retirement calcs is another. A link to FIRE calc or networthify would be good.

Great idea!

- Common acronyms (FI, RE, AA, SWR ...)
- Ideas for side income/side hustles
- Most likely ways to reduce your budget (cheaper housing, buy used cars, ride bike, etc.)
- What is a "safe" SWR
- What will I do when I retire/should I continue to work because I like it
- Pay off student loans vs. [something else]; or in general the order to pay off various debts
- Should I count on Social Security or inheritances or other future earnings?

Yes, details on these, please!  I've seen many people mention stuff like Amazon stores, Ebay stores and other not-that-complicated side hustles that I would like to learn how to do.

Yes!!!  There are a few threads that I get so lost in due to acronyms. It would be a big help if there was a pinned faq on these.
