Mowed the lawn - that was the only productive thing I did today.  I can't say I enjoyed it, but I did enjoy it just as I finished.

weekend update

Saturday I caught up on some chores (I don't super enjoy doing them, but I always feel better when they're done) and went over to my neighbor's house to watch a movie.

It rained all day Sunday, but I dragged myself out of bed to meet up with a couple of friends who happened to be in town for some other event.  We walked around and got a coffee, and I found a cool-sounding mystery book.  Usually I only get books at the library, but it was only $3 and at a non-profit thrift shop whose mission I feel good supporting.

On Sunday, I came into five pounds of fresh strawberries (the really good kind picked straight out of the field).

On Monday, I got to have a nice long phone talk with my best friend. Our schedules are difficult to sync up, so it's nice when we make it happen.

I took my mom to lunch at her favorite restaurant (where she ordered her favorite meal) for Mother’s Day Eve because we both hate crowds and the set Sunday brunch menu wasn’t as appealing. It’s not a cheap restaurant, and it was so nice to be able to treat her and not worry about whether it would bust the budget (thanks, MMM!).

On weekends, I boondock at a lake a few kilometers out of town in my truck camper (I live in it full-time) but last night, because I had planned a few things for today, I stayed an extra night at my office parking lot where I stay during weekdays. Got up at 9 am, went up to my office to have breakfast (cappuccino with home-made chestnut cream on toast) while reading the news on my laptop. Back to the parking lot to work around my truck camper for a few hours, walked back and forth to the local hardware store two blocks away to get/exchange various bits and pieces for the camper. Shower and shave at the office before attending a friend's book launch at the public library located just a block away ("The Science of the Sacred" by Nicole Redvers), an enjoyable event where I reconnected with a few old friends around (free) fruit and veggies, coffee, and butter cookies. Then got myself a free hi-lift jack from a friend who was cleaning his garage, a very useful tool when I get the truck stuck on the beach because I didn't listen to my wife's warning that I would get us stuck...Dinner at a friend's house, then back to my camper with a friend to watch a funny French comedy (Le dîner de cons) on my laptop and sip some cheap but tasty cane alcohol I brought back from Mexico last month. Overall, it was a nice day.

I perfected low-carb crepes.
The recipe and the process.
Banana out of freezer - I buy a big bunch, then peel and freeze them when they get ripe, & mixed berries out of freezer tp defrost.
Cream cheese out of fridge to soften.
Mash banana, add 2 eggs, dash of cinnamon, splash of vanilla, dash of sweetener and shot? of cream.  Mix.
Heat oven to warm, to keep cooked crepes warm.
Mix juice from berries and cream cheese, then mix in berries (cut the big ones).
Cook the crepes, one at a time.  They don't bubble like pancakes, so 4-5 mins per side.
Put on a cookie sheet in oven.
Layer crepes w/ berries & cream cheese on a plate.  Enjoyed!

A murder of crows has been very loud and  active in the huge pine trees located hundreds of yards behind the house.

This morning we searched the pines for their nests.

We didn't find any but it was still lots of fun to look for them.

DW and I took advantage of unexpected beautiful weather and did a workout together outside, then found a new breakfast spot.

There's an arcade nearby with a bunch of old games; you can play for whatever they originally cost. Took about $8 and the kid and I played Pacman, Galaga and various other games until we were out of money. Then walked along the street window shopping.

A friend from out of town came to visit today specifically to see the bluebells that bloom here at this time of year. It's difficult to plan a trip around them because the bloom time varies with spring weather, but she managed to time it perfectly and it was a beautiful sunny day as well. So we had a picnic lunch and walked in the local state park and bike trail enjoying the spring ephemerals. In addition to the bluebells we saw wood anemones, pinks, trout lilieIs, and buttercups. It was like walking through a fairy tale forest.

I bought a fig tree from a neighbor who roots them.   It has one near-ripe fig still on it that the squirrels are eyeing with anticipation.   They ain't gonna get it though!  Bwhahahaha!

My favorite part of almost every morning is walking down to the creek with my daughter and my dog.  This time of year we entertain ourselves by catching (and releasing) tadpoles and tiny fish with our hands.  Other favorite activities include throwing rocks into the water, talking about all of our favorite kinds of wild flowers, and searching for driftwood.  Mornings down at the creek are everything I imagined parenting would be.

Worked a long shift today but decided to walk home instead of getting a ride--the sun was still out and the dappled light through the trees was seriously therapeutic :)

A beautiful hike (actual hike with hills and mud and bugs) on a new-to-me rustic trail.

Typing this with one hand because the cat is sound asleep on me. Every couple of minutes, he twitches a bit and huffs.

I'm in the first week of my sabbatical, so everything is still new to me. I slept in for an extra 15 minutes (still have to get the kids up) & ran errands on a weekday. It was pretty amazing.

Watering and weeding the garden and planning the next round of garden chores and improvements.:) I love my garden:)
What can I say, I'm happy I got out of bed early enough to water while the garden still had shade. The flowers give me pleasure, the garden itself smelled heavenly.

Just knowing you can easily afford to stay home - wandering about the garden with my first cup of coffee, it's a wonderful feeling.

I spent a couple hours assembling a bicycle in my garage yesterday. The only things that could have made it better are a case of beer and my son being old enough to join and assist me.

I enjoyed running laps around the track this morning.  Day went down hill after that.

Generally, the parts of my weekdays I enjoy are:

1. My e-bike ride to work
2. My morning coffee at my desk, unless I'm frantically trying to put out a fire at the same time
3. Lifting weights during my lunch
4. My e-bike ride home
5. Walking my kids home from school and chatting
6. Evening with the family, once I'm done with my chores
7. Bit of time (~30 min) cuddled up with DW in front of the TV after the kids are in bed, sometimes with activities to follow
8. Video games to unwind before bed
9. Reading in bed

Unfortunately, the majority of my day doesn't fit into those parts.  Think I need to change that.
