What Did You do to make Today Awesome?
« on: June 26, 2017, 08:20:29 PM »
We have epic FU money stories, walls of shame, but I could not find any discussions on what made today awesome.

For me, a thunderstorm passed through the town and knocked down a powerline into the street. As I was riding down the street I noticed the powerline and cars driving extremely close to the downed lines. Nothing was marking the downed lines and I didn't have any sort of emergency flashers on my bike to set out. Since large tree limbs falling caused the problem while unorthodox I started piling up limbs in front of the area where the lines were down until the power company could repair the lines. I then called the power company and no one had reported the downed lines yet even though persons were stopping in their cars to take pictures with their phones as the tree also fell across a Jeep. As I was about to ride away a father and his about six year old son rode by and he thanked me for marking the lines. Made me feel awesome. My wife also noticed the pile of branches in the street as she drove home, double awesome because the big pile-o-branches worked.

What did you do to make today awesome?

Studied Spanish for an hour and a half at Starbucks. Watched the market and planned my next investment this week. Created part of a prototype for a planter box I am working on and plan to start selling soon. Attended some Pokémon Go raids and gym battles.

There are just too many great threads on this forum to keep track of now!

Not that I want to compete, but what need are you trying to meet with the planter box? A specific plant, size, or drawback from a traditional planter?

I got fiber internet installed at home. :D

I get to make the breakup call with Comcast later this week.  Almost looking forward to that.  Almost.

Now that's pretty awesome, especially if those numbers in your signature are your fiber speeds.

Since I'm off for the summer I've come home to care for my elderly mother and give my sister a much needed break.  Mom loves zinnias so on my way home I stopped and bought 120 zinnias and I got the last of them planted today. (Mom has a lot of flower beds.). Give it a few weeks and her flower beds should look spectacular.

It's not my signature, just an attachment, but yes, that's the actual tested speed of my fiber line. $10/mo more than 25mbps from Comcast (with the bs promo rate I had).  Since it's only fiber and not "cable" or "phone" lines being run, they were able to dodge the "exclusivity" horseshit agreements with Comcast/AT&T in my area.

I bet that was an awesome feeling to look back on the work you've done. I know I was stoked when I finished planting my garden this Spring and I didn't have near that amount.

I rode my new Trek FX2 bike to the commuter rail this morning.

How was the ride? Better or worse than your previous method and what tweaks did you find you need?

The planter box is unique compared to the ones you've probably seen as it has artwork carved out of the wood on the top with unique designs that are filled with colored seashells and bonded with epoxy. Hard to explain on here, but it's a woodworking project I've been trying to perfect to use in my garden as well as sell some. I've been tinkering with a lot of intricate designs and they have taken some work to make the templates and the right cuts. You could say it's a hobby that I plan to eventually make money on. I'm about 2 months away from having everything set up and started to sell our surplus. We are working on producing at least 50 pieces before we dive in. Currently close to 20 finished pieces. I can post a picture of my first planter box once it is complete in a week or two if you are interested?

Positives: booked next blood donation. Finished "The Reason I Run" book about an everyday yet inspiring marathon runner. Cleaned kitchen windows then put Rain X on outside of one of two windows, to carry out a small controlled scientific experiment to see if it's effective for keeping windows cleaner (Rain X was good for repelling water from car windshield and hence improving visibility in medium/heavy rain in my car, when I had my car).

Not-so-positive: rang up electricity provider to arrange smart meter installation (they sent invitation letter), to be told that current smart meters can't be installed in blocks of flats due to signal interference issues. Not clear to me why electricity company wouldn't have a database to know themselves what kind of property it is...

That is a pretty neat idea.

I would be interested in seeing the finished product. That being said, I'm going to be frugal and be content with a look or two.

Today I got off work and was feeling quite dull and unmotivated to the point I was thinking of not going to the gym before heading home. I still went and even though I was questioning why I was there through the warm-up by the end of the workout I was glad I ground out the reps. I'm in a much better mood now and looking forward to supper.

I took some stuff I didn't want to Habitat for Humanity.  Got rid of clutter, got a tax deduction, gave someone else the opportunity to own "furniture store art work" at a steeply discounted price.  AND saved some gas as the Habitat was much closer than the dump.  Then I took a nap.

Spent some time in the sandbox with my one year old, helping him shift small amounts of sand into his bucket. Good times despite a bit of rain, mosquitoes and him being grumpy from having a cold.

Took my first Irish Language class (decided, why wait till I am RE?) last night and did two Duolingo lessons on the commuter train this morning, feeling proud of myself!

Built another mining rig. The little money making machine hums away, heats my home, and has pretty blinking lights to admire.

Boxed up and delivered some unused glassware and other household stuff to a local church for their upcoming giant flea market.  Took a 30 minute walk around an old neighbourhood.  Heading out soon for a training session for some volunteering I'll be starting (in-school reading buddy).

I'm happy about all of these but, after a few months of retirement, I still struggle a bit with the thought "Have I done enough?"  As someone has said on this thread and/or elsewhere on the forums, doing nothing is awesome too and I really believe that!  Working on what "enough" in terms of activities looks like for me - a nice challenge.

Still pinching myself that I'm retired and my time is my own!
