I see this with my parents, my dad was forced to retire and didn't have anything to retire to.  He just sits at home most days and sleeps when he's going to Costco, his health is deteriorating quickly and it's just making things worse for him mentally and physically.  My mom doesn't want to retire because he has health issues and is scared to go on Medicare because it is not as good as her work insurance.  Sadly I think one of them will be close to this statistic.

I guess my parents are outliers. My Dad worked until his 70's until basically forced to retire. He's in his mid 80's and in decent health for his age. My mother otoh is in her mid 70's and not in such good shape. It's been 2, 3 years since she retired. She's actually now in worse shape since retiring, since she is not moving around, getting out of the house as much because she doesn't have to go to work.

In either case, I have no problem working and keeping busy past my ideal retirement age (62) but it would be nice to get to point of not HAVING to work, and then I can entirely choose how my day is organized.

I’ve seen several studies lately that point out that people with more education and higher incomes generally work until they are older, which makes sense once I thought about it.

So I don’t think there’s a “one size fits all” conclusion to be drawn.

I would think a big reason for that is higher education is more likely to equal a desk job. People doing hard physical labor can't keep doing it forever - one of the reasons that continually pushing back retirement age is unfair to those who need to be able to retire the most.
