What's your "Final Exit" playlist?
« on: June 07, 2019, 03:09:26 PM »
Let me set the scene:

It's your last day of work at the job you can't wait to leave. You lick the frosting from the farewell cake off your fingers, gleefully toss your employee badge on the boss's desk and head for the exit. You stop at the door, turn and wave (one finger or five, your call) goodbye to your now former coworkers. What songs will set the appropriate mood for your final escape from hell?

Keep it a max of 5 (I know, I know: it shouldn't take 5 songs to finish any commute for a true mustashian) for the sake of brevity and please include song title and artist, plus a short explanation/ justification of your choices if you like.

I will FIRE in 12 weeks and want to create a kick ass (for me) playlist to accompany the sweetest commute I will ever experience.

Thanks for playing!

The Vogues - "Five O'Clock World"

"but it's a five o'clock world when the whistle blows
No-one owns a piece of my time
And there's a five o'clock me inside my clothes
Thinking that the world looks fine, yeah"

Lindsey Buckingham - Holiday Road
"I found out long ago
It's a long way down the holiday road"

PLACEBO - Slave To The Wage
"All it takes is one decision
A lot of guts, a little vision to wave
Your worries, and cares goodbye"

Traveling Wilburys - End Of The Line
"Don't have to be ashamed of the car I drive (at the end of the line)
I'm just glad to be here, happy to be alive (at the end of the line)"

Nina Simone Feeling Good
"Dragonfly out in the sun, you know what I mean, don't you know
Butterflies all havin' fun, you know what I mean
Sleep in peace when the day is done, that's what I mean
And this old world is a new world
And a bold world
For me"

Can't think of a retirement list, but at the end of every combat deployment I made sure to play the following:

"Home" by Breaking Benjamin

"Just Because" by Jane's Addiction

"Click Click Boom" by Saliva

"Hysteria" by Def Leopard

Last Exit-Pearl Jam : "Three days and maybe longer, won't even know I've left." (I like the finality of the song. You're walking out the door for the last time.)
Ramble On-Led Zeppelin : "My freedom I hold dear." (I like how it expresses restlessness and the need to keep moving on to better adventures.)
Beautiful Day-U2 : "It's a beautiful day, don't let it get away." (Self-explanatory :)
Already Gone-Eagles : "Yes I'm already gone. And I'm feeling strong. I will sing this victory song."  (You did it, you won!)

I did not hate my job enough to do that when I quit, I was just tired of doing it and ready to retire.

I did, however, once play this song loudly, all day long, when we were finally able to fire one woman I worked with.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPIdRJlzERo

Among other hateful and underhanded things she did at work, she hired a company to remove the electrical power generator from the house I was living in.   I stopped being nice at that point.

It may sound corny but I always imagine the first song on my list to be the theme from The Flintstones: That "5-0'clock" bird whistles and Fred yells a throaty
Yabba-dabba-DOOOOO!

And I think next for me would have to be Freedom by George Michael.

The rest is TBD

Freedom (George Michael)

I think there's something you should know
I think it's time I stopped the show
There's something deep inside of me
There's someone I forgot to be
Take back your picture in a frame
Don't think that I'll be back again
I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes do not make the man

ETA: @MoMan, looks like you and I had the same idea!  :)

Somewhere Far Away (Little Big Town)

I'm too tired to get a job
Gonna thumb out of Abilene
It's time to take a chance on
Someplace I've never ever seen
'Cause I've got nothing to lose

Too much to see it all
There's miles in front of me
Street signs, never mind
I'm gonna do just what I please
'Cause I've got nothing to prove

Whispers on the window
Gone without a trace
By the time you look for me
Well I'll be somewhere far away

Don't know if I'll stop
I've never been to New Orleans
I'm just a rolling rock yeah
Gonna make a break, break it clean
Don't want nothing but the truth

Whispers on the window
Gone without a trace
By the time you look for me
Well I'll be somewhere far away

Solitary, all alone
To the quick and to the bone
On the edge and unafraid
What's behind begins to fade

Whispers on the window
Gone without a trace
By the time you look for me
Well I'll be somewhere far away

Too tired to get a job
Thumb out of Abilene

James Brown - I Got You (I Feel Good)
This has always been my go-to feel good song for obvious lyrical and funk reasons. Not necessarily job related, but that feeling when you walk out the door and that first Whoaaaow! I feel good! of the song will be so damn in synch.

Cake - I Will Survive
Because I'm a child of the 90s and I love this damn band. If you imagine you're speaking about moving on from a bad relationship and that bad relationship was your job, it fits really well.

Ok Go - This Too Shall Pass
Because You know you can't keep lettin' it get you down, and you can't keep draggin' that dead weight around is an incredibly fitting lyric, and the music video speaks to what amazing things the human mind can do with enough motivation, creativity and time, all things I hope to have more of after exiting conventional work.

I actually made a playlist for my retirement party. There were 14 songs on the list, but here are the 5 most relevant. I think the titles are self explanatory:
1. Good Riddance - Green Day
2. Take this Job and Shove It- Johnny Paycheck
3. Already Gone- Eagles
4. Let the Good Times Roll- The Cars
5. Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye- Steam

As you can tell, I had no problem retiring early.

When I quit in April my playlist included:

Damn it Feels Good to be a Gansta by the Geto Boys (from Office Space).  A few others - Work is a 4-Letter Word (The Smiths), Freedom (Rage Against the Machine), These Boots Were Made For Walking (KMFDM cover).

I also thought of Good Riddance (Green Day).

The Last Goodbye (from The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee)

So Long, Farewell (from The Sound of Music)

I'd need at least one "angry" one, lol.  Something like "The Meaning of Life" or "Cool to Hate" (since work is so much like high school sometimes...  So glad I work mostly off-shifts!) Both of those are by The Offspring.

The Animals, We Gotta Get Out of This Place.  Mostly the chorus:

We gotta get out of this place
If it's the last thing we ever do
We gotta get out of this place, there's a better life
Don't you know, don't you know
Man, don't you know, don't you know, don't you know

I guess that one is more leading up to retirement.  I hummed it alot my last 6 months.

I used to work with an anesthesiologist who would play Roll Out by Ludacris at the end of a long surgery... I think it would be pretty fitting.

Oh, this is a fun question!

Two songs:
  • Once a day, ~a week before I leave: The Final Countdown, Europe. The lyrics have approximately nothing to do with FIRE, but hearing that guitar line while he shreaks "It's the final countdown!" just feels...right.
  • Day of: Take me There, Militia. The first 1-2 minutes, depending on which version you listen to. That's my go-to "Hey, there are great things in life! Let's go have fun!" song.

That has become both my partner's and my FIRE theme song.  Since FIRE'ing a few months ago one of us will just periodically put it on.  Not every day, but pretty often.
