I'm lusting after a different kind of bike porn...

I sold my last motorcycle to get out of the last of my debt back in 2015, and I'm going to get another one when I reach $1 million net worth.

I used to be into motorcycles, I had a 250 Ninja, then a Honda CBR600RR, then a Yamaha R6.  I did a trackday, and commuted a lot back when I had a 90 mile round trip commute. A lot of people get out of them for financial or safety reasons, but for me, the fun just kind of faded and I found myself riding my bicycle more than my motorcycle.  I couldn't bear to let my perfect R6 sit in my driveway unused for months at a time so I sold it.

Weirdly, I haven't missed it much.

Worth.  Every.  Penny.  We use ours daily.

Add me to the Bronco list.  I've never really been a Ford fan but that thing looks sweet.

I ran it without food in it for about 20 minutes right after getting it.  It smelled for like a day but has been fine ever since.

The new Ford Bronco.  Really like the 2 door version.

+1 on the Bronco, Ford knocked it out of the park!  Cool part is my consulting side consulting gig was working on a few of the components on this so I've seen tidbits of it for the past 18 months but not the whole thing all together.  My royalties for about 80 hours of overall work I did for fun will pay for after taxes in cash a loaded 2 Door Wildtrak version with the Sasquatch option...but I'm probably going to wait until they get the first year bugs out and drop the Raptor engine in it (and I can get one of my buddies to get me an employee discount!)  Damn I love my side gig!

Just give me a base Bronco (with larger 2.7T) with a manual trans :).  I'll wait until they start getting returned on lease to consider replacing my ageing compact suv.  Of course the people that lease generally don't get manuals...

A paved driveway. I even have a quote for getting it done. They streets in my neighborhood were paved last year and it seems like a really nice upgrade, but I'm struggling with the Mustachianism of paving my driveway when rock is reasonably serviceable. The driveway is sloped enough to have notable erosion after a heavy rain and requires shoveling ~6 months a year, but it pavement really the answer?
Would it improve your resale value? Do you ever plan to sell? Would it cut down on dirt and dust in your house? Are you consumer and SL debt free? Can you comfortably afford your lifestyle plus the cost of the driveway improvement?

Would it improve your resale value?
- Probably? It's hard to find a straight answer, but more and more of the best maintained homes in the neighborhood are getting paved driveways. Some homes had them before the street was paved but not as many.
Do you ever plan to sell?
- I think there is a decent chance we will sell in the next 5 years. Most likely reasons would be to built my own house for fun and profit if I RE while DW keeps working (she enjoys her work). The other reason would be if DW gets tired of her work and we decided to go travel.
Would it cut down on dirt and dust in your house?
 - Yes, for about 6 months a year. The other six a driveway easier to keep snow free would reduce slipping hazards.
Are you consumer and SL debt free?
- Yes, aside from the mortgage which is ~3% so it hasn't been a focus over investments.
Can you comfortably afford your lifestyle plus the cost of the driveway improvement?
- Yes, it would simply mean buying that much less VTI or Brk.b shares in a our taxable account. Any other year it might mean skipping an international trip... Actually thinking of it as trading a couple week trip for a paved driveway makes it seem more reasonable...

I love the Trumpet, but I fit better on the Monster (tall rider). The Street Triple would be way cheaper to maintain!

I still wish they made the Streetfighter--now that was a tall bike.

How big is the driveway. How cold does it get. Can you make it stuff by lusting for a heated driveway that wouldn't need to be shoveled?

It's longer than I want to heat... and I live in Alaska.

I have spent some idle cycles dreaming up a heated driveway. I might be tempted to do it if I were building my dream home and if I could do it myself. The key for me would be doing it with a wood fired boiler based loosely on rocket stove designs... Clean, renewable and doesn't cost me anything to run since I enjoy cutting wood. I could never convince myself to do it burning natural gas.

I guess I'll withdraw my submission then? It's schedule to happen, but i can still cancel for another month or so without expense. I'll need to avoid hedonic adaptation though or I might have trouble roughing it later if we build our own place.

You guys, Santa Cruz just dropped the 2021 colors for their bicycle range.  This is really stupid (since I have a pretty decent gravel bike already), but I really really want this forest green Santa Cruz Stigmata:

It's been on my bike wish list for a while, but the 2020 colours were rubbish. Who wants a baby poo yellow bike? Luckily lockdown has made every bike in the entire of england sold out, so I don't have to try too hard to not buy one

I want to build a sauna in my basement.

I used to do 30 to 40 minutes at 185 F 5 days a week.

Not having access to the gym sucks. I work at a University and had access included in my compensation. Now nothing and I don't think they'll open gyms (and sauna in particular) in the short to medium term.

But, a place like Sana Fin will send me the materials for the inside of the sauna (wood trim and heater).

I could frame in a 5 x 7 space in my basement and probably do the whole thing (materials, electrical, assembly) for probably under $4k.

Lots of health benefits to sauna, and this way my kids could have access (the gym says their too young, but young Fins use the sauna at lower Temps and shorter durations).

Doesn't look to hard. Would probably run the wiring myself and hire someone to install the 240V breaker and finish the electrical (or maybe get them to do all the electrical depending on a quoted price).

I thought the mustard color was weird but I didn’t hate the olive color they offered. This green is a whole ‘nother story though!

My brother built a wood fired sauna of entirely salvaged material when he was 16, so it doesn't have to be expensive. His project did start with free cedar siding a local restaurant was replacing, and old 30 gallon drum our father saved years before as well some scrap lumber... The amount of Junk our father saves still drives me a little crazy, but it is awesome to have everything you need for a project already in the yard.

I've been thinking about building a Sauna myself but haven't gotten to designing it yet. Is there enough general interest in DIY saunas here to have a collaboration thread for designing a Mustachian one?

That would be super cool.

Doesn't sound difficult, but the wood is probably fairly expensive (I like your idea of salvage though)

The sauna kit place I was looking at has two basic types.

1) frame your own room and the seem precut tongue and groove cedar Siding.

2) log cabin style with precut pieces that you assemble. Also looks pretty straight forward if you could get the wood.

All day I lust after a vacation property on the coast of Maine or in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.  I have my favorite zip codes and constantly monitor new listings, price drops, when a property goes under contract, etc... the best part is getting pissed off when a property I've been lusting after gets sold (to someone else, obviously).

I'm lusting after a house in a particular area which has beautiful scenery and low property taxes, close enough to a major city to take advantage of all the amenities, but far enough away to avoid all the problems.  The problem is that we're not the only ones to realize it's such a desirable location, and housing prices are easily double the price of where we live now (per sq ft).  So even though our property taxes would be less than a third of what we pay now, the mortgage payment (and/or foregone returns in the market) would make it far more expensive to buy there.

Of course, COVID-19 has severely constrained supply, so maybe prices will go down once things ease back to normal.

That indoor system is way less work than my DIY plans... also more probably 2-3x the price. I was thinking more craigs list lumber frame, some free tin i already have for the roof and building a wood stove or getting one of craigs list. I would probably buy the cedar lumber, but I could also experiment with local wood. MY brother has been sending photos of lumber he made with a $30 chain saw mill and they are pretty impressive. Cedar smells so much better though...

I'm just so unhappy with my bed right now. The problem is, my husband loves the mattress.

A set of fancy leatherbound editions of my favorite fantasy author's books.  Sadly they're $100 each.  Fortunately, several are out of stock and it takes them a while to reorder, so I can push this one down the road.  I probably will buy them eventually, one at a time.

My dream is to convert all my forced air heating into hydronic baseboard heat. I had that as a kid and it was so much more cozy. It was quiet with just the sound of the "tink tink" as the warm water circulated.  Alas, we don't have natural gas here so it would need to be propane and the installation would be a nightmare in an existing build.  I hate forced air heat pump heat. It's like the McDonald's of heating.

Can you do a wood stove? I find wood heat to be the very coziest and it's very Mustachian. When I build my own house I plan to do a wood stove with hydronic as the back up.

.

I have a wood stove in my finished basement we LOVE.   I could put another one on the main floor but I just turned 40yo this year and wood stoves are a lot of work and a lot of mess.  See above post about me spending $7k on a Muck Truck.... Mostly just to move firewood.   Surprisingly the wood stove does a decent job at keeping the rest of the house livable even though it's in the basement.

Basement is definitely better than only having one upstairs... I'd really like to know what the person who designed my house was thinking... I've actually given some thought to building a small hydronic system on the stove to send some heat down stairs. I think I could cut my heating bill enough to justify it. MY first attempt was adding a duct and fan to force warm air down, and over to the other side of the house, but it does not move enough heat.

I'm pushing 40 as well but hope the wood cutting will keep me feeling young long term even if it makes me feel old in the short term...

I had to look up muck trucks, that does look like a handy tool.

Tory Burch wedge flip flops. They’re $68 on the website. I debated for a week and then decided to splurge. They cost me $12 from the factory that manufactures them in China. It’s still a stupid list though because I already have two pairs of perfectly serviceable flip flops.

I'm looking at an e-cooler.  I'm too cheap to buy ice for my cooler and it would be great to have a small fridge for veggies, eggs, cheese, cold drinks.  And I may be having some Airbnb stays later this year, would be handy to use as a mini-fridge if I'm just renting a room.

Condo.

I’m lusting after a condo. I’ve been trying to talk myself out of this for  nearly 2 years. I think buying a condo is stupid because

1) they are poor investments in the Midwest

and 2) Being part of a group, a condo association, that makes group maintenance decisions about an old building gives me the skeevies.

People are generally quite stupid about saving money to maintain old buildings.

As for the other issues with a condo building and governing board, I don’t mind that there are rules, the rules are enforced,  and a bunch of old ladies my age live there and keep an eye on things. I like that atmosphere.

But I will probably buy one when the right one comes on the market because it’s a very small percentage of our net worth.

A modern e-MTB.

Land in several locations around the USA to boondock/host others.

A new Apple Watch.

I've had a series one for four years or so. Both of our watches have certain things that don't work properly anymore, but they are still generally serviceable.

My wife and I were planning on waiting until Black Friday deals to get new ones this year (planning for Series 3). However, I'm sick of not being able to track my swim workouts.

I only have another month or so of swimming this year before the HOA pool closes (way too early for our climate, but it is expensive). I can probably get it for $40 cheaper if I wait until Black Friday ($80 since my wife and I both plan to get one).

So then, is $80 extra worth an extra month of use? On one hand, it's a small amount in the grand scheme of things. On the other hand, the little things are the big things.

Remote work / WFH.
My GF only goes into the office a couple days per week during this pandemic stuff but still gets paid her usual paycheck.
Just being able to sleep in a little bit would be fantastic.
I've obsessed (like many others) over online businesses/entrepreneurship primarily for this flexibility and the ability to make as much money as I'm willing to work for.
Lusting over a lifestyle that may or may not be real..
I work for a serial entrepreneur.  Let me tell you from the front lines that the reality is the opposite of your dream.  I guess it depends on what kind of small business you're running, but the amount of money you make can be completely divorced from the number of hours you put in, and there's no such thing as a real vacation.

Moving back to NZ. I know it's 4/5 years away but talking to my friends there it seems like an oasis of normality and I miss that.

I can certainly understand that. I am listing after moving overseas also. The US feels like being trapped with a bunch of sick or potentially people.

Not helpful, but the s3 watch is a great watch. It felt like the first one with all the major bugs squashed, the main one being waterproof
