My current lust is a big monitor. One of those 40 inch 4K TV or even larger.

I work at home, and I am currently running triple 22in monitors, which was a pretty awesome setup a few years ago. I am sure my productivity will increase with larger monitor because I can display a lot of things simultaneously, but just can not bring myself to spend the money. I may splurge next year for my bday.

My monitor for my home computer is a 65 inch 4K TV (currently only running 1080p resolution though). My work computer is set up with a pair of 22 inch monitors, and I feel that's been just fine for productivity.

I have a 43" 4k at work and would be exceptionally displeased to go back to dual monitors. I suppose that depends on what you're doing, though.

Coding software and writing documentation for me. If I was doing something like graphical design I would certainly need more resolution.

So I think I may have finally quit my 20 year nail-biting habit. I think my nails are the longest they have ever been. And I want to get a manicure as I've never had one before (other than fake nails). But that's the worst thing ever to spend your money on as a mustachian.

I just discovered that there will be Funko figurines for Horizon Zero Dawn. I have managed to be a good Mustachian and not get sucked into the Funko craze. But I wants them, precious.

A ZPacks ultra-light tent and backpack.  About $1000 total.  My mind is trying to justify it as a concrete step towards goal of hiking PCT.  Realistically might use once or twice in next year, and better to wait.

If you're going to hike next year, perhaps start the hunt for a used one now?

Apparently I only lust after things for my kids. Specifically, things that will turn them into exact replicas of me. What more noble goal could there be?

Spawn2 sat on one of these this weekend:

There is nothing cuter than a 9yo on a tiny road bike.

This is probably the last answer you'd expect, but my boss said he would make a "serious" attempt to go vegan if I quit biting my nails. At this point I think I'm going to keep going even if he fails, but then I'd still be able to hold it over him (kidding...sorta).

You could make a similar bet with a friend or have a friend develop a commitment device. I remember a YouTuber who did a commitment device of having to work on video-editing and such every day for a year. If he failed, his sister would donate $10k of his money to Westboro Baptist Church.

One thing that helped me not relapse much so far is to keep my nails/cuticles as smooth as possible. I realize that I will pick at my nails and skin if there is a hang nail or a rough/broken edge on a nail. It's impossible for me to ignore it. So I carry a nail clipper and file everywhere I go. Polish helped in the initial stages too, particularly clear or clear with glitter so that if it chips it's not noticeable and I'm not tempted to pick at it.

So.. so many things...

-Line 6 Helix Effects and Amp Modeler ($1500)
-A pair of QSC K12.2 mains ($800 ea)and a KW181 sub ($1400)
-And what the hell, as long as we're being stupid, upgrade my mixer to an X32 Rack or X32 Compact. ($1000-$1500)
-The accessories to put it all together, cables/stands/cases/etc. ($???)

It's not just the price that makes these things stupid, it's the fact my band would take 1000 years to pay them off at our current gig rate. But I still want it.... :D

Scooter for adults. I used to regularly watch a YouTuber who incorporated a lot of skateboarding in his videos and I thought it looked amazingly fun. But I am borderline middle age with a whole bunch of health problems that would be horribly exacerbated if I fell while learning to skateboard, so a scooter looks like a safer option.

A set of cutlery. We got ours gifted from someone that was downsizing, then a temporary roommate lost a few pieces and replaced them with cheap stuff that doesn't match at all. It really gets on my nerves.

Yea, music gear. Specifically PA gear for a band. Playing bass is one of my hobbies.

Parents are clearing out their basement and let me pick from their old vinyl collection.  So now I have a stack of good music and no record player.  Looks like I can get a decent turntable and speakers for $150-200.  Going to try thrift stores first, but who knows what I will find.

I got my wife a Funko Pop X-Files figurine as part of her wedding gift (pre-mustachian days). It literally just sits on our bookshelf now and takes up space. In the ~3 years since it's come into our home I can't think of one time either of us has even said anything about it. We literally just move it out of the way to dust the bookshelf, and put it back.

The stupidest thing I'm lusting after right now is my own apartment.

I'm currently renting half an apartment, all inclusive, for 20% of my monthly net pay. In three years I'll be debt free. Renting my own place would mean 35% goes to living expenses, and some added expenses for inconveniences in commute/laundry (mostly time). Debt repayment takes longer. Buying would mean my stash is my home, not an investment portfolio - housing costs go up to 60% of my take-home pay. I currently have $0 for a down payment. I do have 3 months emergency fund.

I'm in my 30s and I am so sick of living with roommates. Also I want a furball.

Just say no. No living situation is worth 60% of your take home. A savings rate of 40%...assuming you didn't eat food or anything leads to retirement in 20+ years according to networthify.com (also assuming no Social Security, etc.)

This:

Looks cool but seems ridiculously over-priced for what it is. Also, making your own one of these (from welding together metal down to programming controllers) seems like an awesome FIRE project.

You and me both...I stopped racing because it's so expensive.  I found an Obutto R3volution seat for $650 semi-locally, but so far have managed to not go get it. :)

OK philosophical question.. When is a stupid thing not a stupid thing?

I mean a Ferrari is stupid by almost all sensible measures.. You can only drive at 65 to 80mph in most places i the USA and you only need say 150hp in almost any sized car to do it.

So is a 220mph/600hp car stupid?.. The easy answer is yes.

But what if you are FIRED with $4m and an annual spend of about $50k.. Would a $1m car that is outrageously over-appointed be stupid in that case? My Wife would argue .. "yes, lets donate that $1m to our fav charity and dig more wells for villages in Africa". A noble persuit but dammit I saved that money and WANT a Ferrari!

OK I don't WANT a Ferrari but the argument stands for any outrageous "want it" item that I have denied buying myself for 35 years.

Disclaimer.. We have about $2.4M, FIRED and I WANT a black Chrylser 300.. Breaking Bad style, but that too is "stupid" based on the definition above.

I have about 300K net worth plus a few K in checking. I want to buy a 2K ring, but it would be really stupid, because I need to get through a divorce (even if mostly diy going to be a couple K in fees), daughter will need braces in 2 years, have a car payment, house improvement wants, the list goes on. Basically, I can't figure out when I will ever feel comfortable enough to buy myself something that costs 2K, at any time in the foreseeable future.  In fact I kind of need a pair of boots (the soles of my last boots fell apart 2 years ago). It's hard for me to swallow paying $150-200 on real leather boots, which seems to be the going rate nowadays.

Well therein lies the Mustachian problem! I.e we deny ourselves buying anything expensive even if it will improves our lives because we are delaying gratification in order to get to FI faster.

I'll happily compromise on my FI date to have an awesome life now - the thing I try to avoid is unnecessary long-term expenses, i.e. getting a nicer house, expensive cars, etc.  I could easily live somewhere cheaper and buy cheaper cars than I do now, but I find the happy medium - 80% of the benefit for 30% of the cost, if you will.

It is relative and different for everyone....

Can we use a sub-compact car when we travel for vacation with my parents? Yes.
Would we be a lot more comfortable in full size SUV? Absolutely.
Does the SUV suck more gas? A lot more, no doubt.
Can we afford the extra cost? Of course.
What does my wife currently drive? a gas guzzling SUV, because that makes her happy, and happy wife is happy me. imo is a lot more important keeping her happy than trying to save some gas/cash.

Speaking about Ferrari, would I have one? Hopefully later in life, but yes I like to own one. Do I think it is sensible to own one? Yes, because if I own one, I will be taking her to a track where I can use all 600 bhp :)  I do not think it is stupid to buy a 50K car when you have 2.4M in the bank. I do think it is stupid to buy 50K car when one is living paycheck to paycheck, but at the end of the day, hey it is your money, you can spend it however you like :)

I am all about saving money and being frugal, but I am also about enjoying life and be comfortable, and I do not mind spending extra for certain things.

I think this is not the point of Mustachianism

Quote from: Mr. Money Mustache
If I were telling you to spend less money just so you could get out of debt, save up a fortune, and then eventually spend loads of money (which I recall is a paraphrase of the Dave Ramsey slogan), the advice would be useless. Because that would imply that the lower-spending portion of your life is less good than the subsequent high-spending part.

I bought the ring for my wife (a little over $2k a decade ago) when my net worth was negative...

This:

https://brausupply.com/products/unibrau-all-in-one-electric-brew-system-v-3

Looks cool but seems ridiculously over-priced for what it is. Also, making your own one of these (from welding together metal down to programming controllers) seems like an awesome FIRE project.

Yeah, I definitely agree that it is overpriced, but if it wasn't ridiculous it wouldn't qualify for the thread. The idea of putting something together on my own is definitely  being entertained...

I want to buy my cat an overpriced catnip "kick stick" instead of saying I'll make one and then never doing it.

Did it. Bought an Apple Watch. I actually like it but I doubt I’ll ever make a call on it and I seem to use it to mostly: check time, monitor my health, check my sleep, track exercise and quickly look at messages. My only rationale is that I would have gotten so type of fitness tracker and I like to have a watch (I used to wear both), now it’s just all in one.

I am currently typing on an iPad 2, which is very old and slow. I have just ordered a newer model. Not the most expensive Pro model, but the one that costs half and is only called iPad. We ordered a lock is Chine for 6 dollars.

Studded Wrathchild tires from 45 NRTH. Not really a dumb thing, I could use them for my heavier snow commuter.
They are very expensive though, that is the stupid thing.  Not many companies do the 3" studded tires. Most do 4" tires.
