The other stupid thing I'm thinking about is a lease on an exotic car... like a Lamborghini / Ferrari / McLaren.  People may laugh ( I would !)  but the older you get, the more you think "I only live once... why the hell not?"...   It's funny how time changes your perspective!!

Leasing a McLaren 570S is ~$3,100/month plus tax (47 months)... [source]

That's nuts! I would pay $500-1000 for a 1 day rental and no mileage restrictions.

so roughly $150k + taxes / fees for nearly 4 years... but if it includes all maintenance it might not be too bad of a deal.  Add in insurance and the total may be $200k for 4 years or so.  Wondering if it's worth it to lease or simply buy outright and be able to do as you please...  wish I could somehow justify it for my business so I could write it off, lol... then it would be a no-brainer.

I've also dreamed about a Sprinter van for camping as well... most of them are around $120k - $150k I believe.  What are the new models that are from $40k - $100k?
We're looking at standard cargo vans, and we'll fix one up ourselves for camping, as we did with our current van.

Those factory-ready Sprinter campers are definitely drool-worthy. Never thought an RV could be that sexy! It'd be too much for us though, since we use our van for a second vehicle and for hauling stuff as well.

there are clubs that rent exotic cars... like  https://www.gothamdreamcars.com/exotic-car-rental/mclaren-mp4-12c-spider  ... however, rates start at $1,500 and go up a lot more.  If you can find a McLaren for rent for under $1k, do it!!!

This is why I'm considering leasing or buying one for my own pleasure... I don't want to pay the exorbitant rental rates, and have the daily mileage restrictions.

There are fifteen 2012 McLaren MP4-12Cs (including one Spider) on Autotrader right now for less than $150k. About half of those have less than 10k miles. Ten year old Ferrari F430s and Lamborghini Gallardos can be found for under $100k. Depreciation has possibly bottomed out on these older exotics, so you generally only need to worry about maintenance and insurance costs.

I like the dodge promaster and ford transit vans as well. In another couple of years I expect there to be more of a used market for these vans. Off the shelf new they are still cheaper than a sprinter van, and probably cheaper to maintain as well. I was thinking $25K for the van and another $10k for DIY RV conversion.

Nice... I haven't looked into the older Mp4-12C... I probably should, lol.

I'm actually lusting after the 720S right now... but I heard it's sold out for a year or more.

I think that's a sweet spot for a very practical camper and part time mobile "home".  There are a few folks on Youtube who live in vans full time and make it work, amazingly.  I'm not so crazy but I also want "freedom" to travel and stay where I want.  Pretty tempting... life is interesting when there are so many options.

Oh yes, the 720S! Now that is a lust-worthy car. Cost no object I can't think of many other cars I'd rather drive.

A new car. Current one is running fine but is getting up there in age. Would really like to have a new hybrid or fully electric car.

I'd love a red Mercedes for the last car I'll be driving, my lil ole red 1998 Ford Escort is slowly giving up the ghost. I've always wanted a Mercedes and I'd be happy with a used one, but sigh, I guess it'll be whatever I can find for 12K that is dammit, "sensible".

Maybe I should google Mercedes for 12000? :) or maybe there is a lil red Mercedes fairy that is listening to my tale of woe?:)

Full time preschool for my 4 yr old this summer...and I'm a SAHM.  A wood beam in our cathedral ceiling, 2 new large tattoos. Ohhhhh and a lifetime supply of Ciroc vodka.  I'm a simple gal.

There are plenty of used Mercedes for under $12,000.

For example: https://www.truecar.com/used-cars-for-sale/listing/WDDGF8BB9BR162692/2011-mercedes-benz-c-class/

More than I would spend on a used car, but not completely un-sensible.

Hi, Mercedes Fairy here. There are at least 30 such red Mercedes in Florida. Examples:

@RWD - I think I'm in love - that second one looks soo good. I think I will look into it - THANK YOU!
I don't drive much anyway, so the mileage isn't an issue and I can handle service every so often.
You make a good Mercedes fairy:)

I've been reading about these junk car racing series's, like Chumpcar and LeMons, where the car has to be  sub ~$500 or whatever, and that got me reading about rallycross, where you race a beater car (or a fancy car, I guess) around a cone-track in a field or gravel track.  The racing beats up the car pretty bad, so people deliberately don't get nice cars, and it totally pulls at my "go fast but in a thrifty way" desires.

It looks like so much fun, but now I think I need a rusty E30 (late 80s, early 90s 3-Series) BMW to race. Like this one:

Then do this with it:

Unfortunately, I still think it'd be ten thousand+ dollars to buy the car and get it prepped for racing.  I guess even budget auto racing is still expensive.

Warby Parker Robinson prescription sunglasses = $175

The driving season is coming up soon with my S2000 group and I've been wearing regular sunglasses but with my eyes not being so bueno anymore, these would make a DRAMATIC difference as I currently wear my non-sunglass Rx WP when I drive and I don't know how I did it before...

I'll probably be able to sneek them in during my next bi-weekly budget as this month's was shot due to a traffic ticket and mother's day T_T

Ugh, it never ends.  No I'm lusting after a Katana (actual sword) just because...  Absolutely no use to me, but I just want...

Oh, and now I really want an H-Alpha solar telescope.  Despite having a perfectly serviceable (albeit not as awesome) white light solar filter for my 130 mm reflector scope already...

I have a Katana. Totally worth it.

It helps that it was a gift from a very wealthy friend. :)

What I'm lusting after is not a thing but a service: I would really like to hire someone to deep clean my house.

A fully decked out Tesla Model X P100D with auto-pilot and all the other bells and whistles.

In the meantime, I'll suffice with a Model 3 with auto-pilot / autonomous driving package...

I'm absolutely fascinated with the idea of a self driving car. Summon my car? Parallel Auto-Park? Drop me off and pick me up? Take me the 120mi to my home office hands free? Huge storage space for all my work samples? Integrated technology, gps, etc? GIVE IT TO ME!!!

I have to admit. I have a fully refundable ($1k) deposit on a Model 3. If it can follow through with it's promises, I'm going to be hard pressed to not buy one.

Really want to tint my windows. My car is small so it wouldn't be too crazy expensive, and my black leather seats get too hot to sit on in the summer. Usually I put a towel or something down. I'm justifying it that it's cheaper than getting a new car with stronger AC (yes I've recharged it, it's just that the car is almost 15 years old). Also, I survived all winter without heat so I should at least be comfortable in the summer, right?..
I almost did that to a 24-year-old car, then decided "next summer" and then the car's engine gave out during the first summer.  It's not too terribly expensive to have done in the grand scheme of vehicular ownership, but I'd want to be sure I'm amortizing the cost over at least a few more years of car life.

I know in my case, it would have definitely led to less A/C use, probably not enough to pay for itself in gas savings, but it would definitely still have saved a non-zero amount.

I got a quote -- $200-240 including removing existing factory tinting on the rear window. I feel like it may be worth it, especially in the south. It's a 2003 with only 150k miles and the engine sound great. In South Carolina the legal limit is pretty decent, 27% light.

Just be careful if you get the tinting and move. I bought my car in Georgia, where the legal limit is 32%. My car is about that level. It's pretty dark. The state I'm currently living in has a limit of 35%, so I'm technically breaking that state law. The only reason I passed state inspection is my mechanic understood that I bought the car out of state and he decided to ignore it on the paperwork for me. It's not something the cops would pull me over for by itself, but they could ticket me for it if I were to ever get pulled over for any other reason.

I'm moving next week to another state that is at the limit of 32% though, so I'll be good again soon enough fortunately.

I actually got pulled over for having too heavy a tint (tint was on the car when I bought in in AZ).  The state trooper had some sort of measuring device and decided that my windows where technically under the limit.  Frankly, given the questions he was asking, I think he was just looking for an an excuse to search my car (as a lone young male driving north on I-15 I probably fit the profile of someone transporting drugs).

Oh man, do I have a bad bout of materialistic lust right now...new truck...espresso machine (and of course, super bad-ass grinder to go with it)...small boat cruise...new laptop...camp trailer...

I was just posting about cfiresim on another thread, and that it gives me 100% success rates in its modeling, even when I load it up with conservative numbers and lots of spending...but we still work pretty hard (DW at her office job, me on my hobby-business).  I think that is fueling part of this lust--knowing that we have a more than sufficient stash that we continue to pad rather than fully RE'ing.

yea for sure!! One of my dreams is to use a nice Sprinter camper to travel across the US... but the poor gas mileage, and the high cost may not be worthwhile compared to driving a more fuel efficient car and simply staying in hotels.

Problem with hotels is you have to plan much more carefully to find one to stay at, and may not always have availability when you need it.  I've ran into such problems in the past in popular spots...so a Sprinter van allows me to rest most anywhere as needed.

It's probably true that staying in a hotel may is more cost effective. Especially when you consider that if you're staying in campgrounds, those can run $30 or more per night in some areas.

We do like to stay in campgrounds though, and a van is perfect for that. Our first van was a 1980 Chevy, retired from being an electrician's work rig. When my boyfriend brought it home, I was like, "Geez, what a heap, I don't know if I want to be seen in that!" It was kind of grungy, rattly, and had no AC. He put in some storage and a full-sized bed with a thick foam mattress. After the first night sleeping on that, I was sold! I never wanted to sleep in a tent again!

Another advantage of a van is you can stay overnight for free in rest stops, and sometimes other places as well. Plus, you can pull over anywhere, hop in the back, and make yourself some food or coffee. I also use it for lodging for retreats I go on a couple times a year, instead of sleeping in group quarters or in a tent.

I know vehicles are terrible "investments", but vans do seem to hold their value quite well. And we do like having a second vehicle.

EnjoyIt

Oh man, do I have a bad bout of materialistic lust right now...new truck...espresso machine (and of course, super bad-ass grinder to go with it)...small boat cruise...new laptop...camp trailer...

I was just posting about cfiresim on another thread, and that it gives me 100% success rates in its modeling, even when I load it up with conservative numbers and lots of spending...but we still work pretty hard (DW at her office job, me on my hobby-business).  I think that is fueling part of this lust--knowing that we have a more than sufficient stash that we continue to pad rather than fully RE'ing.

Nice place to be. . .Congrats.  Sounds like you can afford the fancy espresso machine and grinder.  What are you looking at?  I too am in the market for new/improved equipment. Still researching the grinder, but I am seriously thinking about purchasing the Profitec 700 or the Lucca m58.  Currently leaning towards the Lucca for the joystick handles and the nicer portafilter. I am a little detracted through that the only place to buy it is from Clive's.

I want a tiny vintage camper. They are so cute and look like a fun way to travel. One day...

A city/commuter/cross bike.  My 2001 entry level road tweaked to be a frankenstein city bike is no longer sufficient.

Longer story short--I wanna a new bike.

Winter clothes. Cable-knit socks and new slippers and a navy coat and a new scarf...

My wardrobe is fine, so I shall just continue in my current pattern of adding everything to an online shopping cart then closing the window, closing my laptop and finding something else to do instead of spending money on things for which I have perfectly satisfactory alternatives.

We've been eyeing a $992,000 new construction home. 4bed/3.5bath 2700sqft. SoCal coastal living.

Given our outrageous $2600/mo 1bed/1bath rent, current low-low mortgage rates, and the potential tax savings given our income... it's been hard to move on from this one :).

The Lucca A53 and the Eureka 65E is the combo what I want...and I don't (yet) have any reason to not want to go through Clive's...they have been really helpful thus far (and in my past dealings with them)

...does foregoing the $600 Bubinga wood panels make this a mustachian purchase?

My concern with Clive's is not them, it is that they are the only one out there that I can order parts from to service this machine in the future.  They will have me by the short and curlies.

May I ask why the A53 instead of something with the E61 grouphead?  And yes saving a few hundred bucks on not getting wood is very mustachian of us :) Not to mention I think the steal look is so much more bad ass.

May I also ask why the Eureka? I am currently researching what grinder to upgrade to and have not looked at this one yet. Seams to be in my price range.  I see Clive's sells it as a combo deal for what seams to be a reasonable price.

I am lusting for a Sportsmobile as a live-in/travel vehicle. The Sportsmobile has everything I am looking for in vehicle for overland travel. That's pretty much the only thing I want. But with a price tag between $50K and $100K, I can't see how I could fit this purchase within my budget.

I'm really wanting a drone. But spending somewhere between $400-$1500 and having to deal with all the FAA and local regulations just doesn't seem worth it. I might try to rent one for a weekend just to satisfy my desire and prove to myself it's too much of a hassle!

Some naughty drone owners have been flying over the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which is illegal. Last week, one drone owner lost control and the drone crashed into a car. The driver had dashcam footage of it. Luckily, he didn't hit into anyone else. Our FAA here said they'll regulate more if stupid people can't help themselves and spoil the fun for everyone. Sigh.

A 2007 Corvette Z06 with 22k miles in Atomic Orange was just for sale for ~$25k.....about $8k under what it should have been.

I didn't buy it, but someone got a HELL of a deal.

Atomic Orange is the fastest color.  93% of people know that.

Yeah, go borrow or rent one.  Odds are you'll get bored pretty quick...  If you don't, well, then apparently you need to buy one for your new hobby.  ;-)

It's really close in color to the MR2 I have now.  I love orange...

If you give a mouse a cookie...

Got my first bike in a decade a couple months ago. Now I want a new helmet. And a fancy ceiling hoist. And tools for DH to work on the bikes. And so on.

Unless it's only worth $24K (or less) for some reason that you're not aware of...

Yeah...salvage title would do it, but I didn't see anything at a quick glance. I didn't thoroughly look, though. Must refrain...
