What's in a name?
« on: April 14, 2015, 07:40:46 AM »
Calling all creatives! I have been toying around with the idea of starting my own blog regarding financial advice for millennials, as well as starting my own event planning consultant business. BUT! one of the things that is a pretty big roadblock for me getting started is something so silly and seemingly small; a name! I've already started writing blog posts, but don't want to launch yet without a great and catchy name, and I would like to get business cards made so that I can start getting event clients, but can't think of anything professional sounding but still creative, that doesn't sound "done a million times already".

So, I want to pose a question to all you creative Mustachians. How do you come up with a great name for blog or business? What are some of the great names that you have had? Let's hear 'em!

Here is some free coaching:

Start by making a list of words you associate with money and finances. Good words. Bad words. Cliche words. Write down at least 50 words (just to be arbitrary) if not 100+.

There. Not joking; this will help. No one can say what your blog name should be without understanding your personality, goals, and vision for the blog (if they did, you should pay them for their assistance). Also, most here are not millennials and therefore unable to say what has the most appeal.

Bonus: Write down 50 words that have to do with writing or blogging. Branch out.

Thanks, that's really helpful! I've already been doing this in my head, but it may help for me to get it all down on paper.

As far as that blog goes, you'll have to make sure that the name you want/like is not already taken.  That's assuming you intend to have a "stand alone blog" for which you will have to obtain a domain name.  I recall that my first choice of domain name for my blog was taken.  So, have several workable alternatives in mind.

Good luck.

Keeping that in mind as well. I actually did come up with a great name, but it was taken already, so I am back to brainstorming.

There are a bunch of online automated name generators that may help you as well.  You will find it can be difficult to find a catchy name that's not already taken.  Actually, you may be amazed what's already taken.

Don't stress too much over the name- content is what will keep your readers coming back. Look at some of the most successful companies out there-
google? Yahoo? aol?  Starbucks? The names are kinda dumb, but the product is what matters.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
