Weight Loss During Quarantine?
« on: May 27, 2020, 01:36:41 PM »
I'm starting to wonder if I'm the only person who is experiencing weight loss during the quarantine, not weight gain.

Pretty much everyone I know is complaining that they have just been gaining weight due to stress eating, spending more time in front of TV, increased alcohol consumption, etc.

I'm having the opposite experience. The day after I got sent home to telework, I started losing weight. I began exercising one hour a day, which is something that I've always been too exhausted to do after a 12-hour work/commute day. I've only brought home healthy foods, so there's no encountering a coworker's candy dish during a weak moment, or having to deal with cake or donuts to celebrate a coworker's birthday. I'm cooking every single meal instead of buying frozen meals and nuking them 3x a day for convenience's sake or because I'm too tired to cook.

I don't have a scale, but I'm pretty sure I've lost at least 15 pounds in the last two months. When they finally recall me to work, none of my office clothes are going to fit. They're going to be too big - not too small.

Anyone else having a similar experience? Or am I the only one?

Yes! Lost the last 5 pounds. Partially because I used to lift weights multiple times a week and I switched to almost all cardio now so lost some muscle. But I stopped drinking during the week and only do takeout 1x a week so no business dinners airport food and networking events makes a big difference. I also take walks now. I have always exercised intensely most days of the week so that hasn’t changed.

I lost a couple pounds at the beginning when I was being more careful about my food intake. I kind of fell off from there, so I am trying to get back into it now. I have to be intentional about taking the dog for a two mile walk every day. I am trying to make sure that happens, and just consider it a replacement of my commute time.

I'm down a few but only know because I've been weeding out my clothes and some work pants are looser than I remember from a few months ago.

I'm probably down some in physical activity and up some in alcohol consumption so the main difference has to be eating. I've settled into a pretty natural 2 meal a day rhythm (9 or 10 am, 6 or 7 pm) and have been increasingly good about not bringing crap food into the house.

I do have a scale so I know I'm down 10 pounds exactly. I've actually had to start supplementing with an extra protein shake during the day to keep from losing too much weight.

I always figured I was eating pretty clean at work with the occasional cheat day or cheat treat, but this has been really eye-opening to me to see just how many empty calories I was adding at work, and how many more calories I was getting from occasionally eating out.

I don't think that I've lost any weight, but I've definitely lost fat and gained muscle with all the cycling that I've been doing.

Haven't lost any weight (which is good, in my case), but am definitely fitter...but then, there was nowhere to go but to improve, practically speaking, since I abandoned all pretense of working out last winter.  But that doesn't have much to do with quarantine b/c my life has hardly changed at all day to day (I've worked from home for years and don't go out shopping or to restaurants hardly ever).  It's just that I get a lot more motivated to do physical stuff outdoors in the spring.  So I started working out more since I got back from a trip in early March (spring and warm/hot weather arrives in mid March here).

First couple of weeks working from home I lost about 5 lbs per week since then It has remained at a consistent 1.5 lbs a week.

I am honestly not surprised at all, I drive 10 hours 2 days a week for work and eat breakfast and lunch on the road (typically crap food). The other days of the week I go out for lunch, a few nights a week we used to get takeout and go out to breakfast with friends on Saturday and Sunday.

Most days I was too tired to do anything after work other than come home and plop down on the couch.

Now we have been cooking and eating at home, I have had time to work on the garage and go for a bike ride multiple times a week.

This just reinforces why I want to FIRE and confirms my suspicion that I will be much healthier the sooner I can make it happen.

I C am happier as well, I have been able to take care of things that have been bothering me that I just do not have time to address normally

I'm basically holding steady.  I was trying to lose weight this year.  How much, don't know.

I seem to be fluctuating by about 2.5 pounds, which is typical for me.  I'm fluctuating at a weight that is about 6 lbs less than it was at the beginning of the year, but the same as it was during COVID.

Thing is, I'm exercising a lot (same as before), eating about the same too.  I'm basically running and weight lifting and don't really feel like I need to lose weight.  My BMI is 24.8-25.2, depending on where I am in the 2.5 lb swing.

Yes, also have lost 15 pounds. Exercising more since I have more energy without the daily commute and getting ready for work.  Eating healthier is easy at home.  Lots of junk food laying around at work. Don't keep much junk at home.

When the lockdown hit, I started jogging (very slowly) 5 miles nearly every day.

While my weight is the same, one of my girls mentioned more than once that my stomach has diminished significantly.

My orginal goal on Jan 1 was to lose 30 pounds this year! as of March 14th I had lost 6 (not a great start to the year but it was something) Since March 14th when I started WFH, I have lost an additional 22 pounds! No eating out, no stopping for breakfast on way to work, no junk food at work (someone always has something in the faculty room). I have been walking approx 9 miles each day, eating healthier food, making more meals from fresher ingrediants (much less processed foods). I am starting to feel healthier!

Congratulations to everyone, I am losing  weight intentionally in quarantine. I have not had any take away in over 2 months, and no alcohol, but I can see people treating themselves to junk food as a coping mechanism, I know I have done that in the past.

I've lost eight lbs, mostly due to the significantly increased stress that homeschooling while working 10 - 12 hr days has introduced into my life.

My weight doesn't really fluctuate much no matter what (maybe 5 pounds?). I do feel a couple pounds lighter but prob due to losing my winter weight. Also, not eating much restaurant food, having drinks at bars (food is more boring, less likely to overeat). but, also not going to the Y anymore (no swimming : ( ) so feel a tiny bit skinnier but also less fit.

I gain weight when I get out of my routine. This happens when I am traveling and eating at restaurants and visiting family and eating holiday feasts. Staying at home the last couple months makes it easy to stay in my exercise and diet routine so I am back to my target weight.

I was working on gaining weight during it. Then I got sick (edited to add: not with C19) and lost the 4 lbs I'd gained plus an additional 6 lbs. Once I get the all-clear from my surgeon I'll have a lot of eating to catch up on! I'm impressed by those who set up new routines during lockdown and adhered to them. During the first few weeks we noticed a ton of new runners and walkers in our neighborhood. Their ranks quickly thinned, so to speak.

I've lost 10-12 pounds since March (it was 12, but it's fluctuated a bit in the past couple weeks).  Some factors: no commute, so more time to be outdoors exercising and doing yard work; less stress and more sleep; cooking for myself - no dining out, and no lunch presentations where vendors bring us food a few times a week.

On January 1st I made the decision to not drink alcohol for the month of January...also started walking a few times a week...resulted in about 7lbs lost.  Since COVID-19 hit, been working from home and the grand total is about 20lbs since January 1st...from 187lbs to 167lbs.

I work in outside sales so I'm driving in my car all the time, eating garbage for lunch (on my own and with customers).  Since the COVID I've been working from home so no more garbage eating. I also started doing 100 push-ups a day (20 at a time).  Noticing some good results...my work clothes won't fit me "when I go back" though.

My (completely arbitrary) goal is to get down to 156lbs, which is how much I weighed when I got my drivers license at 16 (I'm 39 now).  I reintroduced booze into my life since being in lockdown...We'll see if I can get that low again...

I don’t know for sure, but my jeans are definitely zipping up with more ease than they did and I feel like I have maybe lost a bit of belly fat. At any rate, I’m definitely not gaining.

I absolutely had a problem with stress or boredom eating at the office pre-pandemic. Now that I’m home I have more options for dealing with stress and boredom (also, I have a 4-yr old around and if I’m eating something, he wants it, so I have much less interest in eating if not hungry).

For a few weeks I was actually having a problem of unintentionally undereating, then after a few days getting super hungry and bingeing. I seem to have sorted that out with better (slightly more protein) snacks. Not really sure where my weight will end up but I overall feel that my eating habits at the moment are the best/healthiest they’ve been in years.

I don't weigh myself but my pants are definitely looser (and I didn't need/want to lose weight). I attribute this to me rationing food somewhat, since we're trying to grocery shop as infrequently as possible and it's hard to get delivery slots (major hard-hit city, no car). Like, not intentionally starving myself or anything, but being mindful of eating smaller portions to stretch out our supply, and thinking really carefully about whether I really need another serving.

I also signed up for a CSA to ensure there's fresh produce arriving here weekly without me needing to do anything, so I'm eating way more vegetables than normal.

My partner got laid off and has lost 12 lbs in 2 months (and he does need/want to lose weight). He says he's not really trying to, he's just going for daily walks to get out of the house, is not surrounded by vending machines/office sweets/the multiple places to get unhealthy lunches downtown, and, most importantly, I think, is no longer in a toxic job that abused him for 10 years. He says it's easy to eat small portions and not gorge himself, even though being jobless is stressful, because the stress pales in comparison to what was happening at the office each day.

I'm down almost 30 pounds since quarantine.  Kinda odd since I FIREd last year so it isn't like my job changed with the virus.  But I have recently made some changes to help control my migraines and decided with everything closing down, it was a good time to really start planning meals and making an effort to lose the weight.

Then the weather was perfect for walking, slightly too cold for everyone else (i.e. just above freezing) so I had the park near my to myself.  15 miles of walking a day helps drop weight.  I love cold weather :).

I've lost weight. More excercise. Less social drinking. I'm eating about the same and even some extra snacking/desert items, but the combination of less alcohol and more excerise is resulting in a calorie deficit. The COVID Diet? ;-)

Slower changes, but same direction. Lost 4 pounds in last month, 1 inch off waist, 1.5% body fat. A few extra exercises, fewer grocery trips for junk food.

Down 10 lbs and was wondering if I was the only one.  The reduction in stress during quarantine has really helped.  Didn't realize how much stress eating I do under normal conditions.  The longer we're locked down the more I hope we never have to go back to the way things were.  Current conditions are definitely better for my well being.

On average I'm getting about 30,000 steps in (about 15 miles) per day.  My two biggest consecutive days were over 50,000 steps each, but doing those back to back gave me some ankle trouble so I have cut back (almost a marathon each).  DH has started making comments about Gondor needing aide and my arriving on time even on foot :).

Unfortunately most of my lock down was with an infected tooth I couldn't find anyone to take care of.  I had already lost 15 of the 20 lbs I was planning on losing this year (hard core push to get me back to my ideal weight) when the lockdown and tooth problem hit.  You'd think tooth pain would help with weight loss, but it turns out a diet of tylenol, advil, and alcohol doesn't do the trick ;-)  I gained half the 15 back, but now that I finally had a root canal done I'm off the alcohol (man that can really pack on the pounds, but it helped me make it thru without pulling my hair out) and back on track again, so hopefully it was just a blip.

Good for everybody who's lost weight during quarantine! I'm down 8 pounds during quarantine, 12 since the beginning of the year and 19 since last summer. Slow and steady. I live near a bunch of hiking trails, so I got back into hiking during quarantine since the trails were deserted and outdoor activity was permitted in my state. I'm fitting back into all my smaller-sized clothes and some of them are even getting a little large. I think the best part is just how easy it is to move around and how much more energy I have.

Prior to the lockdown it's harder to make it consistent with the occasional overtimes, or drinking with friends and colleagues.

Now it's waking up at 6:40am. Work, make my meals, exercise. I try to do home work out or jog two or three days, rest for a day and repeat. Feels good!

:D.  Very dangerous over short distances!

I too like bike riding, it just hasn't felt like biking time so I have been rocking the tunes and/or audiobooks and enjoying the looping paths between soccer fields in our little local park.

I'm down 7 pounds since the start of the year, and 30 since the start of 2019. Been a little less disciplined than I'd like with my eating habits, but lately I'm trying to turn on the stove and cook something every day now.

Thankfully I've been able to keep up a fitness program since I switched from a big box gym to kettlebells last year.

I lost a bit of weight, but now that I'm doing more cross-training I look and feel much more fit.  I'm going to have a really hard time going back to working in an office and having less latitude on what I do with my time.

I've lost about 28 pounds since I started isolating in mid March.  I was already on a diet, down about 75 in total since I started the diet (and down about 110 from my lifetime highest weight).  It's definitely slowing down lately.  I usually write about travel, but I documented my diet a few weeks ago here:  https://thehotflashpacker.com/the-3e-diet-weight-loss-for-travel/

I've been *very* gradually losing weight for the last 9-10 months.  The batteries on our scale died and I have actually felt like it's better for me not to know, but I suspect I've accelerated the weight loss (which was averaging about a pound a month--so very slow!).  Body is noticeably different, as is the fit of my clothes.  I'm eating healthier and less, and we bought a fancypants elliptical machine at the beginning of all of this.  I've been putting in 15-20 miles a week and in addition to changes in my body, I'm seeing significant changes in my stamina.  I can work out longer and harder than I could 6 weeks ago.  And I'm no longer winded if I have to go up and down the stairs a few times, which is great.

In a few more weeks, when I'm more confident that there will absolutely be a meaningful jump (because seeing the scale not move would be hard on the motivation), I'll replace those scale batteries.

Me too.  But it was somewhat intentional because closing the gyms forced me to lift less weights and I cut calories.  From about 152 lbs to 145-6 lbs @ 5' 7".  - morning weight.

A great byproduct of this is I feel much better with a minimalist MMM style exercise regimen where I've been doing mostly body weight stuff, push ups, incline push-ups, decline push-ups off a park bench seat.  Tree branch pull ups, and rock curls and triceps extensions.

I did find a good YouTube video on how to lose weight during Quarantine - https://youtu.be/_Iie6yZGEhk (mature content).  It goes on to discuss other things too, but, well, it goes a bit off topic, so you can, you know, stop, like I should have....

I've lost about 4 pounds since March.  My eating hasn't really improved much (but slightly), but I have been exercising in some form every day.  The "light" days involve just walking the dog a couple miles.  Otherwise I alternate running/biking days with weight lifting at home.  I definitely look in better shape, but the number on the scale doesn't move that much for me.  I tend to easily pack on both muscle and fat (curse of being a shorter guy).

A great byproduct of losing weight:  I probably save somewhere in the range of $10 a day in my food budget.  When I wasn't dieting, I was eating crap, buying lots of snacks and eating out.  So I'm sure I've saved over $500 since the quarantines started.  I've had to buy some shorts in my size, but only spent about $25 for a couple pairs of shorts because my old shorts were falling off.

I started working out by doing some simple weight routings about 2 weeks ago.  I can tell that I'm leaning out a bit more, and I'm back at my "pre-quarantine" weight.

I need to find a good way to do cardio that isn't going to destroy my knees. I hate running outside, but treadmill is not terrible. Maybe the gym at work will be opened up again soon. Or I should buckle down and get used to driving my bicycle out to the trails.

I've lost a few pounds, but like some others it's due to inability to lift weights in the same manner.  Through a combination of dumbbell exercises and TRX-style workouts, I haven't had too much muscle loss from my upper body, but my legs are definitely suffering.  Body weight and dumbbells just aren't a substitute for heavy squats/deadlifts.

DW lost weight at first, but I think has put it back on due to frequent purchases/consumption of chocolate-covered almonds and chocolate chip cookies.

Same.  In fact, exact same two items.

My husband's knees is exactly why we bought an elliptical instead of a treadmill.  We are loving it so far.

Those are indeed difficult items. The trees they grow on should be covered with more thorns.

I'm down about 11lbs., so far. I decided that there is no better time to kick off a healthy diet than when I'm at home all day and have easy access to the kitchen to make healthy things. My usual excuses were about lack of time due to commuting leading to take-out or too easy access to the work cafeteria. Now that I WFH, I can't keep using those to delay getting healthier. I started getting serious about it towards the end of May so I'm a bit of a slacker.
