Vanguard Prime to Vanguard Treasury
« on: July 11, 2016, 07:40:48 PM »
I could use some help. I contribute 6% to my 403B (no 401K available) at work. I got an email saying I am being switched from Vanguard Prime Money Market Fund to Vanguard Treasury Money Market Fund. I am very ignorant about my investing. But when I compare these, it looks like Prime has been performing at 0.13 for one year and Treasury is 0.25 for 1 year. Can I assume this is a good thing for me?
Favorite spots to read up on investing so I have more knowledge?
Thanks!

Long story short there was a recent change in regulations. The SEC is trying to take something very simple, money markets, and make them very complicated because a very small minority of money markets had problems back in 2008.

Instead of confusing you with all of those regulations and having to subject you to a lot of new complicated rules Vanguard is just switching you to a money market that is exempt from the rule.

The new rules require that most money market funds fluctuate like bond funds instead of being fixed liked a savings account that earns interest. Certain money markets are exempt so Vanguard is switching a lot of accounts to the new one.

You should feel pretty comfortable with your money invested in Treasuries.
