Using motorcycle insurance as to pay healthcare deductible
« on: December 09, 2015, 09:25:37 PM »
My current deductible is $6850 of which I don't really spend much towards it being 25. I own a motorcycle which is the most dangerous thing I do and most likely to be hurt doing. Getting a low deductible on my health insurance would cost an extravagant amount of money, however getting medical coverage for 10000 a year is less than 100 per bike per riding season (I currently have one motorcycle but plan to get another so I can ride offroad). I am thinking it makes sense to have this coverage to reduce my deductible where I am at great risk and even a broken collar bone would cost my whole deductible, but I wanted some opinions on this.

Well - IMO Insurance companies tend to spend a lot of money figuring out the odds of an accident and price their insurance accordingly.

So unless you have reason to believe you're particularly accident-prone on a motorcycle, it's probably a losing bet.

The case where insurance makes sense if you're protecting yourself against a potential cost that would be life-changing (in a bad way).

If you can afford to pay the deductible without having it have a significant impact on your finances, it makes more sense to self-insure.

Sure, this coverage seems like a small amount, but throughout your life your going to be faced with a lot of choices like this (damage waiver on rentals, travel insurance, extended warranties, etc.) - just follow this philosophy with all of your choices, and on the whole, it should add up to enough savings that you come out significantly ahead (unless you get really unlucky, of course).

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
