US trip - LA and beyond
« on: February 11, 2017, 07:44:44 PM »
Hi all,

We'll be spending 2.5 weeks in the US in early July. We're flying in to LA as my wife has family there, though looking for some suggestions to explore beyond the city.  We're travelling with 3 young kids - a 4 year old and 2 year old twins - so plans need to be child friendly.  We're open to hiring a car and even flying if we think it'll be worthwhile.  I quite like the idea of visiting a national park.

All advice much appreciated!

I should add the reason I posted on this forum (aside from it being my favourite forum!), definitely keen to keep costs down wherever possible! :)

Joshua Tree isn't far from LA and is one of my favorite places. Yosemite is great, too, though a bit of a drive. There are lots of beaches (some nicer than others), hiking trails... it's a pretty fun place, which is why I'll probably be here forever (though I do like getting out when I can).

Thanks Mezzie!  Will definitely check out those suggestions.  I assume for the national parks a car is essential...  are there any alternatives or not really (we're not really the 'guided tour' types!)?

There is a train/greyhound that will get you to Yosemite Valley, but it's a pretty long ride, has some weird transfers, and, although I plan to take it someday, I can't say I'd recommend it. I don't know any way to Joshua Tree but by car.

In general, our area is famously underserved by any kind of logical public transit. I always take a train into LA proper, but I know my way around really well. Once out of the heart of the city, transit gets more and more sparse, unfortunately.

Joshua Tree is basically out in the middle of nowhere. Triangulate Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Los Angeles and Joshua Tree is in the middle. Just take I-10 east from LA. Note: It will be very hot out there in July(like 100F+), so be prepared.

Grand Canyon is 7-8 hours away, if interested. Hoover dam, probably a little bit closer. Plenty of beaches, etc...

I wouldn't suggest taking a train or bus to Yosemite but I would suggest renting a car and spending a few days there.  Hotels need to be booked well in advance.  If you want to see a national park it's without question in the top 3, perhaps the best.

I suggest Big Trees Lodge in the park - reasonable price and great location.

Joshua Tree?  Meh...

I recommend visiting Griffith Park, a City of Los Angeles Park.  There is a lot to do there... See the Hollywood sign from a distance, the old LA Zoo, hiking trails and the observatory which would be fun for kids and free to boot.

There are some nice California State Parks to see in the area too.  Torrey Pines State Reserve in Del Mar, a northern community of San Diego is an outdoor hiking park right on the beach.  Fun for the entire family with guided hikes on Saturday and Sundays for free.  Crystal Cove State Park also has a beach and hiking trails and is located in/near Laguna Beach.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
