UnionPlus says they're sending my balance to the IRS?!
« on: April 05, 2015, 06:16:03 PM »
Hi, first post. I had a UnionPlus account but after a month I never got the card so I decided to close it for now and open a NetSpend account in a few weeks. I transferred out all of the money except $1 because I thought there might be fees for the month (I forgot the fees are $2 a month and not $1. I know many banks won't let you close an account in the negative so I wanted to be sure I was paid in full.).

When I called to close today, the rep told me that the $1 left in the account would be sent to the "American Government." I asked her what she was talking about. She finally said they would send it to the IRS. I told her that was extremely illegal (I think?) and you can't take people's funds and "send them to the IRS" just because they close the account. For me, $1 isn't a big deal, but what about people who have hundreds of dollars in their account and try to close it without transferring it out first? Eventually she agreed to send me a check after snidely asking if I really wanted a check "for only $1"). I've gotten refunded a penny before (which I didn't even want) so yes I want my dollar.

No idea if this is typical behavior but a warning I guess. My own fault for leaving any money in there in the first place, but I expected to: 1) be told to transfer the money out and call back to cancel 2) asked where to send the remaining funds.

Those are some really shady business practices. What service does UnionPlus even provide? I checked out their website and it looks like 2002 spam...

They are similar to Mango and provide a rate of 5.1% interest on savings up to $5,000. I assume they just didn't want to send a check for such a small amount of money, which I get as far as a cost savings technique. But when I closed my Nationwide account a while ago they insisted on transferring a penny to me. They said they had to even though I didn't care about the money.

Actually if you owe back taxes it is perfectly legal for the IRS to capture that money from your financial accounts.  Only certain retirement accounts are protected.

I think I would report UnionPlus to whatever agency regulates them.

This seems like a horrible ROI to me, but if you really want to persue it, I'd start with the FTC (FTC.gov) and cite that you think your bank has violated the Unfair or Deceptive Acts or Practices regulations.  They should be able to take it from there.  You may end up spending way over $1 in postage for anything that has to be physically printed and mailed in however.

I would certainly pursue it just to prove a point. I'd be more than happy to spend $50 to nail some fucker trying to steal $1 form me. Hell, I figure it'd be my civic duty - who knows how many other people they steal money from, and get away with it, who can't fight for it back?
