Un-mustachian Kindness pays off
« on: April 25, 2014, 10:36:16 AM »
Last night I was at the grocery store at 11:00pm and there was a man in front of me in line, he tried to pay with a check but did not have his ID so they would not accept the check. His name matched up with his phone # account but the manager told him he needed to go home to get his ID and come back.

His bill was about $10 so as he walked out of the store frustrated. I added his groceries to mine and paid for it in full, a bagger went out to tell the guy before he left. I was just getting to my car as he walked out with a confused look on his face, and the bagger pointed me out before I could get away.

He came over and said thank you and that was the nicest thing that has happened to him in quite some time. He asked for my address and told me he owned a winery and was shipping a case of wine to my house today.  I know the $10 could have been spent "wiser" but using it to make somebody's day better was well worth it to me, even before I knew it would pay off with a case of wine.

Cheers!

I wouldn't call that Un-Mustachian at all!  You helped someone else, with no intention of being paid back.  Bonus score with the wine too!

I'm still learning what it means to be mustachian, but I'd say the whole point of this lifestyle is so you have the financial freedom to do things like that.  Good for you.

I think this brings up a very valid point that I did not consider until reading these posts. I guess I viewed mustachianism through the lens of being the most efficient with one's money. But you brought up more of what I feel to be true. I think I have been looking at this the wrong way. Thanks!

This reminds me of the post MMM wrote in which he talked about MrsMM helping their friends in their house hunt even though she didn't end up with the commission because they ended up making buying a for sale by owner property. It seems the Mustache family helps people pretty often!

I don't view that as unMustachian at all.  It's not about pinching pennies, it's about having the financial freedom to do what you want.  If that's paying for a stranger's groceries, so be it.

Why didn't he just write you the check?
