Two can play at that game!
« on: October 26, 2016, 10:02:39 AM »
This week, we found out my husband will be getting a substantial windfall due to an injury he received about two years ago. So we've known for quite a while that he was going to get a big ol' heap of cash.

Now that we have it, he's been spending the whole thing, at least in his mind. This morning he sent me a link (I would include it here, but it's an Ebay listing and will be gone within the week) to a 1970 Dodge Challenger to the tune of ~60K.

I sent him something much more sexy (SFW):

Well played. Maybe a compromise would be in order, he could get 1984 Dodge Charger to the tune of $600 and you could invest the rest.

Oof, then he's probably been planning to spend it for awhile.

Time to have some serious conversations around what you want your future to look like, and thus how you want the money spent, or invested.  And then give him some time to adjust, if necessary.

Good luck, let us know how it turns out!  :)

My husband has heard some crazy stories from other lawyers about large settlements.

The worst was one guy who decided his best option was to buy a new car with cash so he could get the best deal.  By cash I mean CASH.  The guy's plan was to walk into the office with $40k in a bag or something.  Nothing that was said could convince him this wasn't a good idea.

What kills me is not the (admittedly funny) level of ignorance, it's the stubborn refusal to see a once-in-a-lifetime second chance for what it is.

I'm sorry your husband was injured, but with a Mustachian by his side I'm not worried about whether he'll be okay.

OP here, thought you'd like an update. He did get his settlement and it's safely sitting in the bank awaiting transfer to an investment fund. We are going to treat ourselves to a nice vacation and maybe he'll get a project car for his birthday ;-)

Sounds like an awesome compromise! Thanks for the update.

Project cars are fun.  They can be a money pit, but as long as you're doing the work yourself, it's a reasonably useful money pit, since it sucks all your time and you can't really waste money other places.  Plus, focusing on saving for a set of headers or whatever is one awesome motivator, depending on how you work things out.

I am about to sell my project car (66 GTO).  I finally decided it did not line up with my financial goals.

This is a great compromise....except the vacation part.  I'd rather have a project car than a vacation.  :/

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
