So I have a trip to Portland, OR tomorrow and I decided to try to take advantage of Oregon's zero sales tax and order some stuff (like a new smartwatch) to be picked up at their local Walmart.  I got to the checkout page and sent the order and Walmart sends me their confirmation email saying they received the order.  Then a few minutes later, I receive an email from Walmart saying that they cancelled the order due to problems with my credit card or billing info.  I call my credit card company and they say that there's nothing wrong with the card.  I also try another credit card and same deal.

Btw, I then tried switching to Target, and for some reason, Target adds a sales tax despite trying to pick up in an Oregon location..  guess they're getting smart about this.

Yeah, I know about Amazon Prime Day but for some reason, I'm unable to pick up that smartwatch in an Amazon locker (but did order a bunch of other high value low weight items to be picked up.)

I finally found a sweet Employee Discount deal through Best Buy and ordered it via pickup and so far, it's not been cancelled and I haven't been charged sales tax..  we'll see if it succeeds...

Collecting sales taxes correctly for all cases is really, really hard. It's not surprising at all that some retailers wouldn't handle your use case correctly.

They're probably using your billing address to calculate sales tax, given that you're supposed to be paying sales / use tax on out of state purchases.  If you have a card with an Oregon address it would likely work as you hope.

When I used to live in California, they had a convenient place on their income tax returns to declare and pay use tax. To not arouse suspicions, i would often enter a lowball amount like $20 or maybe the tax on the single most expensive item i remember buying which i wasn't charged sales tax like a new computer or tv.

Then I moved to Texas which has no income tax and hence no way to remind me to pay use tax every year. I suppose there is a way to pay and frankly, I'd rather pay the use tax for Texas than California since I don't pay income tax here while I had to pay use tax in California on top of already getting raped by their horrendous income tax rates, even as a low wage earner there.

I wish my folks lived in Portland rather than Vancouver, WA and that would make things so much easier like shipping stuff to their address directly. Oh well, they're taking advantage of Washington's lack of an income tax which usually amounts to more savings.
