Transmuting Estate Jewellery into Cash?
« on: July 18, 2017, 02:47:09 AM »
Has anyone had success selling inherited jewellery? How can one sell stuff like this without essentially pawning it?

Thanks for thoughts, experiences!

It depends.  How much is it actually worth?  Has it been appraised?  If it's a lot of gold/silver, you could sell it for whatever those are going for.  If it's gemstones/diamonds, those have horrible resale value.  I'd get it all appraised first to find out if you have anything of value or if you have junk pieces then go from there.

Yes, I have appraisals and it's absolutely not costume jewellery.

There's a MMM blog post on where to send silver. I was thinking of anything along those lines-- a straightforward and fair process for selling diamonds, mainly, but also other other pieces with precious stones.

As one of my hobbies is metal detecting, I know the best place to sell jewellery for scrap is www.aragold.com.

You get 98% of the gold value, 90% of the silver value and they remove the precious stones for free. If they like the stones they will send you an offer to purchase them, if not they will ship them back to you. Here is the link for the percentages they pay. https://www.aragold.com/schedule.html

Wonderful company to deal with.

If the jewellery is high quality, I would sell it at an auction that has a surplus of rich old ladies that frequent it.

You can try a site like www.diamondbistro.com or www.loupetroop.com to sell the pieces on the secondary market. It would be good to have appraisals, especially if diamonds or other gemstones are involved. I know Wedding Day Diamonds also buys jewelry, though I have no experience with how fair it is: https://www.weddingdaydiamonds.com/sell-jewelry

Any watches in the jewelry you want to get rid of?
