Tennis Ball Machine. Worth it?
« on: February 05, 2018, 06:46:09 PM »
I was wondering if anyone thinks buying a tennis ball machine is worth it?

I am a relative novice and I hate hitting with my girlfriend because she is pretty good and I feel like my lack of ability to rally could be detrimental to her game, also I am sure it is not as much fun for her to play with someone of my caliber.

Which brings me to my dilemma. The only way I will get better is to play more but it is hard to find partners of similar strength. I could also get a membership to a gym/tennis club for $150+ a month. So I ask, anyone who has or has had a tennis ball machine, was it worth it? It seems the one I would like is around $1500.

I know I could find more Mustachian types of activities but I have loved tennis ever since the first time I played.

If she seems to like rallying with you, I'd be inclined to just do that. Unless she's a semi-pro, does it really matter if her game suffers by 5%?

You guys are spending time together, getting exercise, and having some fun.

Until she refuses to play against you, just practice with your girlfriend.

Can you borrow a ball machine from someone?  Find a used one cheap (like real cheap)?  Seems like the kind of thing that would sit around a person’s garage for decades...

I'm a tennis instructor.

A MUCH cheaper alternative, and probably more fun and beneficial, is buying a dozen green dot balls.  Here's a link:  http://www.midwestsports.com/penn-control-tennis-balls/p/521930/

My neighbor is a very athletic guy but a beginner, and we have lots of fun using these balls.  Actually, it's all we use when we play.  The ball has less compression, and goes 75% of the speed of a normal tennis ball.

Why it's good for me:  I can take full swings without feeling bad, because he will be fast enough to get to the ball and prepare for the shot.

Why it's good for him: He can take a full swing and the ball won't fly 50 feet long, since the ball is lower compression.

Why it's better than a ball machine:  Not only is it way cheaper than a ball machine, but it's more realistic.  Ball machines feed you with too consistent of a ball.  In real tennis, every ball has a different spin, speed, depth, etc.  Rallying with someone teaches you to handle a different shot each time.  People who hit the ball machine too much often develop a beautiful smooth swing that turns to shit once an actual match starts:)

If we actually played a match, it would be a no contest, but if we are just rallying, it's a great experience for both of us.

Disclaimer: I have a Playmate ball machine that I use with students occasionally.  Playmate is a quality brand.  It was a $2500 machine owned by a club that was going out of business.  I walked in, offered them $350 for it, and walked out with the machine:)  It has it's place and I'll have my students use it for specific reasons, but your situation wouldn't be one of them IMO.

Good luck and have fun, tennis is a great game!

Ex D1 college tennis player who plays with his wife all the time. If she’s anything like me she probably really enjoys playing with you, in time you will get to where you can rally consitently with her. Like another said, unless she plays for money it’s not that important that her game drops off a fraction.

That being said, I’ve used ball machines before and the good ones are very beneficial if you don’t want to pay someone to feed you balls.
