Top Personal Finance Blogs of 2012 - MMM?
« on: February 28, 2013, 10:46:37 AM »
Hey all,

I mentioned this on Twitter once, but thought I'd try here too.

MMM doesn't give a hoot about this competition by the way (he would probably even tell me that I should take this forum post down), but as the woman behind the scenes, sometimes these kinds of competitions can help bring more attention to a blog.  This is useful for spreading the word and making connections and whatnot.

If you'd like to vote for this blog as top personal finance blog of 2012, go here and vote (today is the last day).  You don't have to register or anything - it's very easy:

http://www.onesmartdollar.com/top-personal-finance-blogs-of-2012/

Thanks in advance!

Not sure how much it's going to help you guys to win a contest on a site that's significantly less popular than your site already is.

I put my vote in.  However, it's also a good opportunity to look at a list of blogs I've never heard of before...

Good point about the site itself.  :)  And yes, there's a long list there of blogs that people might really enjoy.

I had the same thoughts at first, but the contest is being mentioned in several places, including the financial blogger conference web site, which tends to get a lot more exposure (not necessarily page views, but people are starting to look there to see what's going on in personal finance).  The personal finance crew is all a pretty closely knit group and even though these awards and things don't seem like a big deal, they do sometimes lead to some good exposure.

For example, the winners of the recent 2012 Plutus Awards at the Financial Blogger Conference were mentioned on CBS Money Watch: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-505123_162-57513077/top-financial-blogs-for-building-wealth/

If you type in "Top Financial Blogs" into Google, that article comes up near the top (along with Wisebread's list).  It would be nice for this site to get the recognition it deserves, but I guess that means sometimes playing along.  We won't go out of our way to do this, but since this is an easy simple vote, I thought I'd ask.

I do find it annoying that "votes" are what allow a particular blog to win.  If MMM mentioned this contest on a blog post (as some of the other blogs have done), he would win without question as his audience is much larger than most of these other blogs.  He would never mention it though (unless maybe it was Time Magazine or something).

So yeah, this is why MMM doesn't like to play the game.  But, I'm asking you to play just this once.  :)

By the way, you may also like this list of blogs: http://www.plutusawards.com/winners/.

I haven't looked at it in depth, but many of you might enjoy the Oblivious Investor Blog to look at the investing side of things: http://www.obliviousinvestor.com/.  I think it gets mentioned on Bogleheads a lot.

I'm sorry Ma'am but I'm going to have to ask you to stop right thereand take your post down. Asking for votes has been ruled to be public solliciting by a court of law and is therefore not one of the approved occupations for any of the members of this board.

Ha!  Great badge!

Seriously though, I questioned asking for votes and now I'm not sure it was the right thing!  If you guys don't agree, I will take the post down.

Wow.  I'm going to have to get me one of them badges.  ;)

Bah, that badge isn't a real internet retirement police badge. It can't be - it isn't nearly shiney enough. A real internet retirement police badge would be gold. And not that chintzy gold plated stuff either. Seriously, don't you people know anything.

Hell no, leave this post up!

I went and voted, and hope everyone else does as well.

The more exposure this site received (even if it is from something as silly as winning a vote), the more people become Mustachian, and the better our world becomes!

I have so much respect for MMM, due to this, if nothing else:
If MMM mentioned this contest on a blog post (as some of the other blogs have done), he would win without question as his audience is much larger than most of these other blogs.  He would never mention it though (unless maybe it was Time Magazine or something).

How many other sites would the owners have posted over and over "vote for me" and been pimping themselves out for votes?  MMM doesn't care about any of that, and isn't willing to compromise his principals for something he doesn't value.

So inspiring.

But I'm glad that you're acting as the cheerleader for the site.  :)

As I said, the more that know about the way of the Mustache, the better.
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.
I (rarely) blog at AdventuringAlong.com. Check out the Now page to see what I'm up to currently.

Thanks arebelspy.  Not sure I'm excited about being a "cheerleader", but I'll take it for now.  :)  I do think I've convinced him to do things he might otherwise not have done (like go to Fincon and be a speaker, for example) that he was very happy to have experienced in the end.   I feel like the site does get overlooked though (although it is still pretty new), which is why I try to "help" sometimes.

MMM will never change his principles, that's for sure.  He's in for the long haul with this site as well.

Thanks to all of you also, for making this forum an incredible place (it just grew so organically and beautifully without any help from us), for your great comments on the site, and for teaching us new things every day.  When I think of badass, I think of our readers.

Ha ha! I love that MMM is ranked #2 on the polls, which is the #1 position for getting money instead of a worthless shiny moneypit device as an incentive(?) for being popular and badass.

I really don't get the iPad mini thing either.

When I voted MMM was only ranked 4th and quite far behind 3rd place, now he's well on his way to reach the top!

Yes, #2 is perfect.  Thanks guys!  Somehow he got up there mostly without help, so when I saw he was at #4, I figured it was worth asking.  :)

Voted for the man - MMM! This is by far my favorite personal finance site. I'm a mustache in training, and I learn something new over here practically everyday!

Thanks for all you do Mr. & Mrs. MMM!

So yeah, this is why MMM doesn't like to play the game.  But, I'm asking you to play just this once.  :)
Maybe you're just unleashing your hypercompetitive side.  You've already won the game in the third quarter, and now you're running up the score.

I suspect that SmartDollar gets more out of hosting the "competition" than any of the competitors!
