Today I did it: told my boss I am leaving
« on: August 22, 2017, 09:35:04 AM »
I'm not an early FIRE'r - will be 62 in September, so I can collect a check each month.  That will cover about half of our expenses, and the rest will come from investments.  Now that I've told him, I am partly relieved and partly scared.  It's a really big deal to give up the security of a regular paycheck.  But this job is eating me alive and I don't feel as if I have a choice.

House is paid off; no consumer debt.  We eat a mostly vegetarian diet, and I cook at home.  We raise our own veggies.  I know how to sew. Hubby harvested a lot of wood when someone he knew was having trees cut down, so we cut some of our heating bills by burning logs.  The only scary thing is healthcare - but in three years, I can go on Medicare.  Hubby is 58, so he has longer to go.  He hasn't had a paying job in two years; he is our gardener, carpenter, plumber, painter, and pretty much everything else except for chief cook and bottle washer.  The adventure will begin at Christmas, which is my FIRE date.  I know it will take them some time to find someone to replace me, and then I will have to train him/her.  I think the boss thought I was bluffing at first to get more pay, but I told him otherwise.

Many, many congratulation, coppertop :-) It sounds as if everything is in place for you and provided you stay healthy for the next few years you will be fine.

It must be challenging trying to train your successor when you're demob-happy, though.

Congratulations!!

Just be sure you stick to your date - if they haven't found someone to replace you in time for you to train, too bad for them!!  You gave them more than enough notice and are being very generous.

Great idea on leaving around Christmas/New Year. That is plenty of time to find someone to replace you. Enjoy your upcoming adventure.

+1.  You've given plenty of notice.  Some employers leave stuff like this to the last possible minute and then expect a miracle.  Best wishes to you!!

My only suggestion is to work all the angles to your advantage if you're going to work this much of the year. Would having your last day be in very early January trigger a whole new year's vacation pay, for example? Try to leave as little on the table as possible. Perhaps you could just take vacation for a couple of weeks in late December and coast into January.

Congrats!!

Well done. Imagine the many paths you could have taken that would left with only one: having to stay in that job. Instead you choose paths that gave you this option. Good job, and take pride in what you accomplished!

I chose December 22 for a very specific reason.  I am the firm controller.  The week between Christmas and New Year's is impossible to take off.  Last year, my son and his wife had that week off - they live in another state and I don't get to see them much - and wanted to come for Christmas.  But I couldn't have the week off, so I didn't get to see them.  Life is too short to miss opportunities with your loved ones.  I have three adult kids and three grandchildren, all of whom live elsewhere.  My vacation time at this point is just not enough to see my kids often enough to suit me.  This year, my daughter and her family are coming from the west coast for Christmas.  I can't wait to see my grandbabies for Christmas.

Congrats. You have made your priorities and they sound very good. You have been generous with your notice. But don't expect the company to actually hire a new person early on. They might just let it escalate into a problem. Don't give in.
Maybe you know someone you can recommend to take over your job? And try to get that person hired on time?

It sounds like you've thought it through and that you have your priorities well defined. Grandbabies: Yippee!
