Time sucking?
« on: March 01, 2013, 12:48:34 PM »
Love this place. Maybe too much? Been slowly adapting my life to be more mustachian and love the camaraderie with like minded folks but realize that I spend quite a bit of time perusing the forums. Anyone else feel like they spend TOO much time here? I need to try to better balance my time here. Just thinking out loud I suppose..

It's exciting at first to find good information and like-minded people.  The next step will be to move away from the keyboard/screen and start putting the things you learned into play.  Then, come back and tell us about your experiences and your success!

People tend to conform to the behaviors of their social group. My real life social group isn't as mustactahian as I want myself to be, so I come here to reinforce my mustachianism.

When I started reading the blog and lurking the forums a year ago the primary drive was to learn new stuff. That's become secondary now, the nuts and bolts of FIRE aren't really that complicated. I used to read every new "critique my asset allocation" and "should I sell my car?" thread. As I've gotten the hang of things I've backed off on my reading.

It's a reminder for me to be frugal.  Because we don't decide to be frugal once in our lives, we decide about a million times every day.  Someday I may have this down so pat I don't need a reminder...

There's a part in the profile settings where you can see what your peak times are for looking at the site, and which boards are your favorites. If you really want to cut down your time here, find out why you are here at specific times (for me, it's during slow periods during my workday) and find a different thing to do at that time. If you have a specific board you're at all the time, think about why that's your favorite and then try DOING more of it rather than reading about it.

Personally, I'm OK with the amount of time I spend here. It's better than half the other things I could be doing.

I feel blessed to be here this last week. My child had a 104 fever for 6 days, despite medical intervention, and did not act sick at all. It's a weird virus hitting my area. I was so glad to be here because I could have been watching crap on TV LOL. I took the week to finally learn some investing info here that had confused me in the past. I can see how someone with no television reception would enjoy being here too.
