Thoughts on Remote Medical Billing Jobs?
« on: May 23, 2017, 08:53:50 AM »
From what I can see, these types of jobs are / should be ones that most people look into with this type of mindset. It is still a job, after all, but it seems to pass the "eye" test.

Going on Indeed (or any of the jobs websites) it seems like medical billing is going to continue to be huge. It also seems like there will only be a stronger desire as boomers age and health care most likely continues to be more confusing. Throw in the whole idea that working remotely is still working, but probably one of the most Mustachian types of work you can do (no need to commute, get all dressed up, etc.), I am wondering if anyone has had success with this line of work?

I think the biggest barrier to entry is needed to gain some sort of certification, but it also seems like there a million different tests and I'm not sure where to start. And even though those tests could cost money (I have seen a few as much as a thousand or more), the wage for these is around $15-20 on average. Throw in the fact that you can work from where you would like as well, and I believe this could be a great opportunity for a part time gig or a full time role?

I just wanted to know if anyone else has had any experience in the field and also what training is suggested if so.

Medical coding (assigning the diagnosis and procedure codes before going on to the biller) is also done remotely.  Many of the coders at the hospital I work at come in once a month for a meeting, remainder is done at home.  Coders do a 2 year program at community college from what I'm told.  Another possibility to consider.  I don't know what's involved to become a biller.
