The only thing I enjoy doing in life is sleeping...
« on: May 11, 2019, 08:10:04 AM »
That's literally it.
It passess time and you don't think about anything as your conscious mind is shut off.
And you also dream cool dreams.

I literally have zero passions in life.
How do I get rid of this lazy mindest.
I feel like I am just passing time in life.

Read great books?  Watch great films?  Experience nature?  Just hang out with close friends?  All of those things can be done for almost no money.

Talk to your doctor, that's a serious red flag sign.

Have you considered getting a mental health assessment? Deriving no pleasure from anything except sleep makes it sound a lot like you might be depressed. Source: I am a person with depression.

As someone with depression, do you also only enjoy sleeping and sleep a lot?.

I like to sleep so I get plenty of it.

Seldom do I dream while sleeping.

 I am  an inveterate daydreamer.

Reverie, which I much enjoy,  consumes most of my waking hours.

If "the only thing [you] enjoy doing  in life is sleeping," you may be afflicted with anhedonia.

If nothing you do during your waking hours provides enjoyment you are  suffering from a mental disorder.

With all due respect, I recommend that you schedule an appointment with a psychiatrist.

Great piece. It should be required reading for every single social worker, psychologist, teacher, shelter worker, bureaucrats, case worker, anyone working or interacting with people facing homelessness, addictions, trauma. Anyone, really, should read it.

When I'm at a low point? Yes. I don't want to do anything except lay in bed and sleep. When I'm living better/taking care of myself/on antidepressants, the enjoyment derived from other activities outweighs the inertia of depression.

There are other factors that could contribute to your situation, like anemia or thyroid malfunction.

I would really encourage you to get a physical exam as well as a mental health exam, if you can. The way you are feeling is not usual for most people and if you want to live differently, there are things that can help you get there.

Also just get a general bloodwork checkup.  It is amazing what deficiencies in various vitamins and minerals can do to your body (low iron, vitB, vitC, potassium, etc).

I woke up early and didn’t want to get out of bed.  I am blaming that more on Monday though.  Usually I get 8 hours of sleep and when I get more than 10, I start getting a headache.

I wouldn't necessarily say I enjoy sleeping but it's the only thing I feel like doing.  It's the only thing I have enough energy to do.

Sometimes I feel like reading a book is a lot like dreaming :).

I'm also a bit of a lazy person right now. It's not that I don't have anything I want to do, it's just that the few hours I do have each day are usually eaten up by bad habits like youtube and reddit. It's been really hard to break those habits, and every once in a while I find myself at the end of a Sunday wondering where my weekend went. I've heard a lot of good things about mindfulness and meditation, and I think I'm going to try to dedicate some time each day to doing nothing.

I listen to a podcast and one of my favorite episodes has been on the importance of "solitude" which I think of as boredom. (podacst). I think one important way to find your passions is to be bored sometimes. Doing nothing is a good way to get bored, and I think boredom is a great impetus to get out of lazy habits.

Just remember that you aren't lazy, you just have a habit of being lazy, and habits are things you can change.

You should try sex...  I mean that is one thing that I enjoy doing in life.

Oh with that in mind,
- falling in love
- enjoying a sunrise or sunset
- laying under the stars
- hiking / walking around a local park
- feeding some ducks
- window shopping at the mall (playing with the puppies)
- audiobooks (this has become a LOVE!) scify novels / self-help (audible)
- hugging someone (read somewhere we crave on average 13 per day)
- kissing...  Um tongue/'no-tongue' your choice
- writing a journal (some of my darkest hours were resolved doing this)
- visiting the beach (something about seeing this makes me feel like home)
- making an exlaborate meal from a cookbook (so delicious and the feel of accomplishment)
- study for a new certification (for me I am a computer guy..  added accomplishment)
- make a new friend
- find a best friend (priceless)

Never thought about it but I guess you are right, dreaming is similar to dreaming.
When you read your mind conjours up the images of the book character's adventures.
When you dream your mind does it on it's own, without reading something, and of course youbare usually the main character.

Just to reiterate what's already been said, this sounds like a classic case of depression.  You should see a doctor.

On top of that you should try some other things that can mitigate depression:
- get more exercise
- eat more foods with dietary fiber
- get some sunshine
- force yourself to do something social

How boring must your life be... what a lack of imagination too. If your IQ is anywhere near mid single digit and up, I suggest you consult a specialist as you might be in a state of depression. Get that sorted as life is awesome.
