The most anti-Moustachian person in the world
« on: April 25, 2014, 11:02:43 AM »
Boxing star Floyd Mayweather.  A quasi "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" special will be airing on Showtime tomorrow (with Richard Leech).  I'm sure most people don't have cable, but a description of what he owns is eye-popping enough.

“I’m definitely retiring when this contract is over,” he told me. “No more fights. That’s it. I’ll go out on top unbeaten. I’ve got plans for real-estate ventures in New York and film production in Los Angeles.

“I’ve invested wisely over the years, and I’m not going to wind up broke. I set a goal of $12 million a year coming in at a million a month in interest alone. We’ve reached that — and I still sign all my own checks.”

Doesn't sound so anti-mustachian to me... he just earns/spends at a much higher level than the rest of us.

"Floyd has purchased 88 cars, including 14 Rolls-Royces of every configuration from Towbin Cars here in Las Vegas."  I would say just a tad higher

I saw that too.  At a 4% SWR that's a 300 million dollar stash.  Sounds pretty believable for him.

Still - when the usual story about rags-to-riches athletes seems to be how they blew every bit of their giant paychecks - seeing that this guy is thinking about his future and investing in it, I just don't see how we could label him the "most anti-mustachian person in the world."

Yeah, dude's got it made in the shade.  He's choosing not to be greedy (one more year and I could buy that super-yacht too!) and choose his health over extra cash.  Sounds alright.

Yea it seems like he is thinking about what to do with his money, investing and what not.

But this is really as far from mustachian as you can be....this is what I would describe as THE definition anti-mustachian.  Just because he as thought it through doesn't make him mustachian....or not so anti-mustachian.

Didn't he lose a 10 million dollar bet on the superbowl?

Good for him.  WAY too many boxers and NFL/NBA guys end up broke, regardless of their earnings.

In terms of saving money, investing it, and becoming financially independent he certainly seems to be doing better than some athletes, and hell, not just athletes, but people in general, who end up blowing all of their career earnings.   In this sense, he probably gets some Mustachian points.

But, to me at least, being Mustachian is also about living on less, consuming less, and trying to be a better steward of the planet.   He certainly gets negative points here.  Now if only there was some Mustachian score board somewhere...

Mayweather is also currently the highest paid athlete with 2 (or 3?  don't remember exactly) fights remaining of a 6 fight contract for what is likely guaranteed at $200 million but likely well over $250 million.
It's also likely that by the time he retires (which he has said will be in the end of 2015) he will have topped $1 billion in pay-per-view sales (I think he's currently around 750$ million).

He does spend extravagantly but is also charitable.  It's about 3 years old but check out this article highlighting a less-seen side of FMJ

Moustacian, Floyd Mayweather is not.  Good with money and a shrewd businessman, yes.  For his fights, not only does get a guaranteed amount of money, he gets a share of the pay-per-view revenue, and all sales of food, programs, ect, at the venue.  He only enters fights that he controls in and out of the ring.  It's the main reason he hasn't fought Manny Pacquiao yet, it's because Pacquiao's promoter will not agree to the financial conditions that Mayweather is demanding.  It would have been the biggest fight in pay-per-view history and more money than any fighter would ever make in a single fight, imagine the re-match opportunities, but he doesn't feel the risk of loosing his undefeated record is worth it if he can't control the financial aspect of the fight.

Much of Money Mayweather's spending is a show.  He's an entertainer, and he knows it.  He has Justin Bieber in his entourage.  You think he likes that kid?  Or it's good for business?

There's lots of very clever and shrewd stuff he does, and his ridiculous spending (and giant sports bets) are calculated moves.
