Thanksgiving loss leaders
« on: November 19, 2018, 08:46:44 AM »
These sales seem to go on everywhere I've looked so I assume it happens throughout the US. The prices are absurdly low; most places have $0.29/lb sweet potatoes and turkeys for $0.27-$0.39/lb right now.

This seems like a prime opportunity to stock up. How does everyone take advantage of these sales? Are there any other Thanksgiving loss leaders I'm missing out on?

Yes! I am already working on clearing freezer space in order to stock up on a turkey or two.

*After* Thanksgiving cranberries usually go on sale for cheap; I throw a couple bags into the freezer for winter baking.

Butter and canned pumpkin are also deeply discounted near me but the $5 turkey is the big one.

I did my weekly grocery shop on Sunday including items for Tday - I think my total was $250 before swiping my loyalty card and I got down to $188 plus a free 15lb turkey. Kinda crazy!

That $5 Turkey is Winn Dixie right? We have no Winn Dixie’s in Ohio or I’d buy a couple for the freezer. Love a Turkey as you get the carved bird one day, turkey sandwiches for several days and then boil the carcass to make a broth and make turkey and noodle soup. Not a giant turkey fan. Just love the old fashioned multi use of the whole thing.

In my area it's Kroger.

I go the day after thanksgiving and the grocery stores clearance out the fresh turkeys for .30c a lb.  Bring them home and run them through the ol meat grinder.  No more mid summer $5lb ground turkey.  Some years I'll pull the legs off, brine and smoke them and I have smoked turkey sandwiches for a year.

Cranberries, I make a ton of cranberry orange jam and stick it in the freezer.

My grocery store gives away a free turkey if you spend $100.  I went last week and again today, spent just a bit over $100 each time, and now have 2 turkeys - 47 pounds, total! - to show for it.  One for Thanksgiving, one in the freezer for Christmas.  I normally don't need anywhere close to $100 in groceries for a week, but I stocked up on stuff that I know will keep.
