Thanks to Mustachianism I just made an un-mustachian move
« on: August 15, 2013, 03:37:02 PM »
My wife and I heeded the sage advice of MMM, saved, and we made a bunch of improvements to our townhome. Then sold it so we could use the proceeds to buy a larger single family. Our family of 3 is expanding to 4 and the townhome is only 2beds. Our mortgage literally doubled in the process, plus a larger home that costs more to heat/cool not to mention water, etc. But, we also paid off $12k in consumer debt. idk, does this go on the mustachian wall of shame or is it a wash?

We're still applying MMM principles to daily life so we can continue saving and paying off our remaining student loans, which are hefty. ($60k, yikes). I believe MMM would have said stay in the townhome with the reasonable mortgage, pay off debt, then move. But the market is hot (denver metro) and the interest rates still low (4.25%) so I wanted to make a move before those went away.

Everyone is different. I don't find it reasonable to expect a family of four to stay in a 2 bedder forever.

True, I would say my "shame" is in not even staying there a little while.

...plus a larger home that costs more to heat/cool not to mention water, etc.

You could find that that's not necessarily so.  Typical townhomes aren't all that well insulated, while you should have considerably more freedom to upgrade insulation & make other energy-efficiency mods.

That's true. I have yet to see the utility bill so I'm not sure where I will be at. My townhome was $100/month consistently. I'm expecting at least double. Summer is ending and the nights in CO get cool. New place has an attic fan as well.
