Thanks for sharing. Grew up on that type of life but have been steadily converted to the "American Dream" as I got older. I don't even know where to start now that I am in a new city with no existing friends. I often reminiscent the past but too timid to do something about it. Perhaps FI will provide me with enough safety net to do something about the way I am living now.

Posting so I can find this to listen to later. Just read the term "new American dream" (in Radical Homemaker) for the first time earlier today.

In my mind the "New American Dream" is somewhat of how Millenials think. It's less about the material things and more about living a happy and fulfilled life.

My wife and I joke with a few of our friends about buying 100 acres of land and living in a commune. I think we're only half-joking :)

^ this. GF speaks often about how she just wants to buy a village and have all our friends live there together.

Er, the topic of the TED talk linked to in the OP?

But just in case that was a serious question, this quote from Radical Homemaker (taken in turn from survey done by the Center for the New American Dream) seems to be what it's about: "86% feel the phrase "more is better" no longer characterizes the American dream; rather, they crave more of what matters."

We've talked about doing this for years with a group of friends when we all retire. I doubt that we will actually ever do it and none of the group of people besides my wife and I are MMM.

Welcome to Bestie Row :)

In short, 3 couples decided to build four "houses" - three separate small buildings (~400sq ft) for their own personal spaces and one communal building for their kitchen, dining area, and guest space. Also designed specifically for low environmental impact and sustainability.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
