Switch job or hope for the best?
« on: July 13, 2019, 11:24:31 AM »
I didn't know where to put it so I put it in General. If it should be moved, please do so.

I'm in a bit of a pickle. Last year I had an accident with my bike corssing the street, got hit by a motorcycle and had a (what they call minor) concussion. Now, a year later I still have a lot of issues and am still on partial sick-leave (which can be used up to 2 years in my situation). My main problems are with my vision, and working behind a computer all day and every day just isn't working. After an hour or 2 I'm totally exhausted, dizzy and very suseptible to sound and visual movement in genral.
I'm receiving care as if I had a stroke but the recovery just isn't going as fast as I would like it to go. But I have noticed that my vision problems do not arise, or are at least a lot less problematic, when I haven't worked behind a computer. All the help I receive help me deal with my physical problems but not working behind the PC is basically prevention. Physical exertion also lessens the problems.

The pickle? I just don't see myself make a full recovery from this with any kind of certainty so it's time to choose. 1 choice is to keep working, using the time I still have and hope for a full recovery with a well paying job with lots of security. However, if it doesn't work out and my employer doesn't want to adjust my job to my condition I lose my job or am forced to take one (through an agency) with up to an hour and a half one-way where my current work is 15 minutes by bike.
The other choise is to accept my current situation and stay with my current employer and ask them to re-educate me into a skilled job for which they are basically always looking for staff.

Current job: Sysadmin (since 2006)
New job (which is within my realm of options and interest): Electrician

Current paygrade is up to 4k gross (haven't hit the top of the pay-scale yet), the new job would be 2.8k gross max. Salary isn't a real issue because we've already payed off the mortgage and the new office would be 10 minutes by bike.
Disadvantages would be that it's a very physically demanding job, at times, where i'm currently basically a desk jockey with the inherent physique. I'm a bit overweight and stamina is pretty weak but I walk a lot as part of my recovery so I'm not a bun without any content.

So, what would you guys do in my position?

Tldr;
Got hit by a motorcycle, don't know if I'll make a full recovery and can now chose to stay and hope or re-educate and accept the salary drop with the same job-security I have now.

Ps. I have a lawyer handling the insurance claim. We were both at fault but as a cyclist i'm protected by law so they have to pay a percentage regardless.
