Sweet Mustachian Car Story
« on: January 21, 2017, 02:21:12 PM »
So I went to the VW dealership today to turn in my 2013 Jetta TDI due to the emissions system scandal.  In the showroom was an old Rabbit GTI from the mid seventies, in mint condition, very much like the 1976 Rabbit that served as my very first car as a teenager in the early eighties. I loved that car, and seeing one in person again made me nostalgic.  I did a search online when I got home, and came across this rather touching story of another VW Rabbit.  A very Mustachian tale, so I thought I would share with you guys.

Great story!  Reminds me of my first car from the same era, an Opel Manta. I miss that car.

US-spec Rabbit GTI were sold 1983 and 1984. Europe had Rabbit GTIs from around 1980, IIRC.

Had a 1984 Rabbit GTI my high school car and I still have it. Damn fun at the time, very easy to work on and reasonably cheap to maintain.

Gah! Your story reminds me that I wanted an Opel Manta for my first car. Also green. My dad put his foot down. I ended up with a green 1975 Ford Mustang II, still a questionable choice. In order to build my credit, I took out a 36 month car loan. The payment was $75.08. I paid it off in 14 months. I was a baby badass long before the term existed.

Thanks for the link; that was a fun read. My bff actually had a green Rabbit of about the same era. I was a more intrepid driver, so I often drove her car when we went skiing.

LOL, yup, my Manta was green.  Green was the color in those days...
