Starting a MMM type group in your city?
« on: January 03, 2022, 05:51:16 PM »
I’m curious if anyones been a part of or started a group for people who like the philosophies of MMM (financial smarts, early retirement, relationships & community building?) local to them? How did it go, what did you do, what was the benefit?

If you did hear of something like this locally, what would incentivize you to check it out?

You can check some of them out in the Meetups and Social Events sub-forum.  https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/meetups-and-social-events/

I'm interested to hear other input because I don't think that sub-forum will get all the answers you're looking for, but if you haven't checked it out that would be a good place to start.  There is a group where I live, but I haven't met with them.  Many of my friends are at varying places along their FIRE journeys from FIRE around 40 to FIRE at 55 to working on general frugality.

I'm involved in my local FIRE community. Honestly, if you just make a Facebook or Meetup group, and post a link in the MMM forums and on Reddit, you'll have a lot of people show up (assuming you're in a city and not Bumfuck, Nowhere). Our group mostly involves online discussions, and we do meetups here and there depending what the rules are - the Covid rules have been changing a lot in my area over the last couple years, so sometimes we can do indoor things, sometimes outdoor, and sometimes nothing. We're pretty low-key and usually meetups are just a group of us hanging out for a few hours at a park, the library, or someone's back yard. Sometimes a walk or easy hike or something like that.

We have a national Facebook group in New Zealand, then a local ChoseFI group for meetups.

The ChooseFI podcast set up local Facebook groups for meetups. You can find out if they have one in your city by going to https://www.choosefi.com/community/find-your-local-group/

Some are more active than others. I'm a member of my group, but I'm not aware of any actual activity in the group. They tried meetups a couple years ago, but I wasn't going to drive 45 minutes away to meet other folks in the area to discuss finances.

Looks like there is a group for my city, with several hundred members.

However, it also looks like it isn't very active.  Only one post in the past month.  Not enough to entice me to get back onto FB.
